About Binaal Billa

Binaal Billa Family Violence Prevention Legal Service provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of family violence and/or sexual assault. Binaal Billa provides case management, advocacy and referral pathways to victims/survivors of family violence. Binaal Billa has a solicitor available to provide legal advice and representation for matters surrounding family violence and sexual assault. Binaal Billa is located in Forbes and provides outreach services to Parkes, Peak Hill, West Wyalong, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo and Murrin Bridge, Grenfell, Cowra and Young.

About the role

The position of Community Support Worker (CSW) is responsible for providing holistic case management to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims/survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault. This position requires the worker to assist and support clients who are experiencing family violence by providing support through advocacy, case management, risk and safety assessments, referrals and support through the court system with assistance from the Binaal Billa legal team. The CSW will be supported and supervised directly from the Outreach Manager for all case management and support for clients who are victims/survivors of family violence. The role will also work to improve the health, well-being and safety of Aboriginal people, families and the Aboriginal community through a holistic approach to trauma and healing-informed service delivery.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing case management, advocacy and support to victims/survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Accepting and reviewing direct referrals from clients and referrals from stakeholders.
  • Conduct safety and threat assessments to assess client’s current risk status and undertaking safety planning if required to ensure clients safety. Liaising with necessary services to ensure this is completed safely.
  • Meeting with clients to provide relevant information, develop case plans and to develop referrals where necessary to ensure clients needs are met in a holistic and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Completing all outreach requirements as specific by the Business Development Manager and the funding agreement. Outreach area’s include Forbes, Parkes, Peak Hill, West Wyalong, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Murrin Bridge, Grenfell, Cowra Young, Tottenham, Tullamore and Trundle.
  • Ability to work closely and professionally with the Binaal Billa solicitors to facilitate conversations with clients, ability to book client appointments.
  • Make appropriate referrals and undertake the appropriate follow-up as required.
  • Work collaboratively with Yoorana Gunya medical service to provide a holistic health service to clients.
  • To identify family violence prevention opportunities within the Aboriginal Community.
  • Actively work and network with relevant members of the community including relevant professionals towards reducing the prevalence of family violence and sexual assault.
  • In collaboration with other Binaal Billa employees, develop and implement relevant community education and social support programs to deliver in Binaal Billa service area in relation to family violence and sexual assault.
  • Develop sustainable support strategies and projects in collaboration with other departments and agencies that are in line with local and cultural needs.
  • Develop, implement and facilitate relevant programs to provide appropriate education to clients on family violence and sexual assault.
  • Complete the following in a confidential manner: general administrative support, file management, photocopying, organising meetings and other duties as per the role.
  • Identify with Aboriginal Cultural values and belief systems and have appreciation of those values and understand the cultural aspects of the trauma associated.
  • The ability to demonstrate high initiative, to remain positive and focused on objectives even in difficult circumstances.
  • Maintain confidential client records. Ensuring all client notes are completed immediately in the correct data system.
  • Ability to provide monthly reports to management regarding Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) as per the funding contract when requested.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum Certificate IV in Community Services (or similar) or willingness to obtain.
  • Previous experience working within the family violence, sexual health or child protection field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in family violence prevention work.
  • Knowledge of relevant community resources.

Essential Requirements

  • Preferred confirmation of Aboriginality however not essential. Positions can be designated Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander positions under section 14D of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  • Preferred experience working with clients who have experience family violence and experience working within the Aboriginal community.
  • Sound knowledge of community health, public health and Aboriginal health.
  • Experience with working collaboratively and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to exercise tact, initiative and sound judgement.
  • Ability to provide a high level of empathy to clients.
  • Ability to hold a National Police Check and Working with Children Check Clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly within tight time schedules and in accordance with variable workload demands.
  • Current valid Driver’s Licence.
  • Ability to travel to complete outreach requirements for the position.

Salary Packaging: You have the option to receive $15,860 per annum tax-free.

Remuneration: The successful candidate will receive a remuneration between $65,000 - $80, 000 depending on qualifications and experience.

Paid Parental Leave: Paid Parental Leave is available for permanent employees.

Rostered Day Off (RDO): one per month

4 weeks holidays a year as per the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award.
