What's the role?

The Depot Manager oversees daily operations of the Scouts WA Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) Recycling Centre, playing a pivotal role in driving financial sustainability and operational efficiency. Reporting to the General Manager, this role is responsible for maintaining high standards of safety, compliance, and quality customer service. Through effective leadership and communication, the Depot Manager motivates staff, fosters a positive workplace culture, and ensures exceptional customer and client experiences.

What is the scope of responsibilities?

Depot Management and Supervision

  • Oversee the daily running and management of the depot.
  • Ensure the depot reaches and exceeds its budget by assisting the General Manager with the overall running and success of the centre.
  • Ensuring rosters are completed considering sales and budget requirements.
  • Recruit, train and retain staff members.
  • Maintain suitable plant and equipment within budget.
  • Ensure all operations are undertaken within budget.
  • Optimise and organise collections with GPS tracking and Bin Management System.
  • Ordering of cash and timely completion of safe and cash reconciliations.
  • Other duties as reasonably instructed.

Work, Health, and Safety Monitoring

  • Ensure site is always kept clean and tidy by conducting regular site walks and ensuring there are no trip/slip/fall hazards.
  • Manage health and safety records (forklift and driving licence register).
  • Ensuring staff are accurately trained and able to complete their job safely.

Sales and Marketing

Work with the General Manager’s direction and support to complete depot sales and marketing administrative duties, including:

  • Promoting donations by volume partners.
  • Assist with marketing program and liaise with sales team.
  • Assist with creation of innovative ways to develop the growth of the depot and liaising with support staff if applicable.
What skills and knowledge do you need?
  • Experience in supervising multiple staff in a team, including recruiting, scheduling, training, and performance management.
  • Proficient in computing concepts such as Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
  • Qualifications and/or experience in business, manufacturing, leadership or similar are beneficial.
  • Understanding of waste disposal, recycling, environmental protection is beneficial.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Sound knowledge in management, operations, and administration activities and processes, ideally in manufacturing and associated industries and occupations.
  • Working knowledge of legal, regulatory, and compliance standards relevant to the Container Deposit Scheme and WHS.
  • Unit of Competence HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (or equivalent) required.
  • Forklift license or heavy vehicle license are beneficial.
  • Familiarity or knowledge of the Scouting movement is advantageous.
What experience is necessary?

  1. An associate diploma with relevant experience; or
  2. A less formal qualifications with specialised skills sufficient to perform at this level; or
  3. Relevant expertise through previous appointments, service and/or study an equivalent level of experience and knowledge to undertake the range of activities required.

  • Adhere to Scouts Australia’s Code of Ethics and Conduct for Adults in Scouting.
  • Pass relevant Child Safety and Vulnerable People Safeguarding checks, including National Police Clearance and Working With Children Check.
  • Complete and maintain mandatory child safety and WHS training modules.
  • Satisfy an employment medical evaluation upon hiring, or as requested by management.
  • Work a flexible roster, including occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends as reasonable and required.
