About the role and team
We are looking for a First Nations Liaison Officer to join us at Mount Gambier Prison. Reporting to the Resettlement & Reintegration Manager (Allan) and working closely with a Case Management Coordinator and a Social Worker, the role is responsible for support services to First Nations prisoners located in specific areas of the prison. In the role you will:
Provide culturally specific support to First Nations prisoners and assist them with family liaison issues.
See newly admitted First Nations prisoners within 48 hours of admission.
Attend risk review meetings where prisoners have been identified as being a self harm or suicide risk, and provide input during these meetings as needed.
Provide information of a cultural nature to new employees as part of their initial training course induction.
Hold smoking ceremonies at the Aboriginal Healing Circle for important cultural events.
Liaise with the Aboriginal Services Unit at the Department for Correctional Services.
Link prisoners with outside agencies as necessary, including Aboriginal Legal Services and local organisations.
Organise and manage cultural celebrations and key events including NAIDOC week and Reconciliation week.
Attend case reviews of First Nations Prisoners.
What we're looking for
You identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Holder of a current driver's licence or probationary driver's licence, with access to reliable transport
Experience working or volunteering with Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander peoples/communities (highly desirable)
