Your new company

The Office of Commonwealth and Government Relations is responsible for coordinating and managing engagement and relationships with government and policy makers. The Office works closely with the Chancellor, senior staff, and researchers.

Your new role

  • Lead the development and implementation of engagement with the Commonwealth Government, setting goals, plans, policies, and procedures
  • Monitor and improve effectiveness
  • Build strong internal relationships with key staff and counterparts to ensure coordination with the APS
  • Work closely with senior political figures to create and implement an engagement strategy based on government priorities and act as a bridge between the political world and the organisation
  • Stay updated on political developments to help the organisation understand and respond to changes, especially those related to its strategy and operations.
  • Provide strong leadership and influence as part of a high-performing team, working effectively with key stakeholders
  • Offer strategic advice and briefings to senior executives on political, public affairs, and policy issues at the Commonwealth level that could impact the organisation
  • Provide expert advice and analysis on complex political matters, including those requiring advocacy of governments
  • Develop and maintain strategic, high-level relationships with key stakeholders in the APS and government, including liaising with senior officials to shape activities and resolve critical issues on behalf of the organisation

What you'll need to succeed

  • A qualification in politics, public policy, or a related field is highly valued.
  • Experience and contacts in the political world, including federal and ACT government, and working with senior figures from both parties
  • Ability to use diplomacy and judgment to build relationships and achieve outcomes, acting in a non-partisan manner
  • Experience providing strategic advice, planning, and reporting to senior management, with expertise in creating and implementing high-level strategies and lobbying programs
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to write concisely, understand and explain complex subjects, and communicate effectively with various audiences
