Our client is a federal government organisation with offices throughout Australia. Due to growth, they are seeking a UX Interaction Designer to join their team in their Melbourne CBD office.

Interaction Designers direct and guide research, design and testing of the scenarios, interaction patterns and interface systems that make up the interaction component with a service. They make decisions based on the evidence of user needs in pursuit of the best service. They prototype and test products/services. They create user journey maps and assist with and participate in user research. They collaborate and manage stakeholders.

Senior Interaction Designers develop design concepts for digital products and services. They design, test and evaluate these solutions to ensure stakeholder and agency requirements have been met. They can interpret evidence-based research and incorporate this into their work ensuring the quality of design.

Duties may include some or all the following:

  • use evidence-based approaches to assist in the creation of accessible solutions centred on users' needs, aims and behaviour that meet agency standards and guidelines
  • apply user centred design/user experience design (UX) methodology to deliver enterprise outcomes and improvements to stakeholder and user experiences
  • advocate for, conduct and participate in user research to design simple, effective and accessible services and/or make recommendations to inform design solutions
  • conduct and apply qualitative and quantitative user research to understand and define current and future user needs, behaviours and motivations
  • identify user needs, business requirements and iterate on design solutions
  • adhere and contribute to relevant UI design patterns, frameworks and governance
  • (including application of branding)
  • design assets such as user flows, prototypes, wireframes and other assets for proof of concept and usability testing
  • undertake rapid and iterative prototyping using agency prototyping tools
  • organise, undertake and report on usability testing and validation of designs with users.
  • build relationships and work effectively with others to design solutions
  • develop and maintain stakeholder relationships to achieve strategic objectives
  • manage workshops, discussions and facilitate the design of the service through
  • collaboration with other professions
  • develop and ensure the continual enhancement of products
  • evaluate solutions to ensure stakeholder and agency requirements have been met
  • manage a team including managing performance, attendance, and health and wellbeing
  • support and mentor staff including coaching and training to build knowledge and capability
  • in interaction design activities exercise appropriate delegations in accordance with legislation and guidelines

To apply for this opportunity, you will meet the Selection Criteria below:

Essential Criteria

  1. Builds visual and audio components and integrates them into the system structure, typically using a games engine. Uses design tools to evolve rapid prototypes of web pages and assess the viability of design concepts. Uses complex visual design tools and organic modelling techniques to create and animate virtual characters within a game or system design.
  2. Undertakes complete design of moderately complex software applications or components. Applies agreed standards, guidelines, patterns and tools. Assists as part of a team in the design of components of larger software systems. Specifies user and/or system interfaces. Creates multiple design views to address the different stakeholders' concerns and to handle functional and non-functional requirements. Assists in the evaluation of options and tradeoffs. Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.
  3. Selects appropriate tools, methods and design patterns to design user interactions with and experiences of a product, system or service. Translates concepts into outputs and prototypes and captures user feedback or evaluation to improve designs. Evaluates alternative design options and recommends designs taking into account performance, security, usability and accessibility requirements. Interprets and follows visual design and branding guidelines to create a consistent and impactful user experience.

Desirable criteria

  1. Apply standard techniques and tools for developing user stories and eliciting user experience requirements. Organises and structures user experience analysis. Works with stakeholders to prioritise requirements and resolve conflicts.
  2. Evaluates design options and prototypes to obtain user feedback on the requirements of developing systems, products, services or devices. Tests the usability and accessibility of components and alternative designs. Administers a range of evaluations, recording data and feedback. Analyses evaluation data and recommends actions. Identify areas for future user research. Checks systems, products, services or devices for adherence to applicable standards, guidelines, style guides, and legislation. Evaluates the usability of existing or competitor systems to provide benchmark values and as input to design.

This will be a 12-month initial contract with a further 12-month extension, 40-hour week, with a hybrid work arrangement (minimum of 3 days each week in the office, with flexible arrangements in place for the remaining 2 days).
