The role

The purpose of the role is to exercise the responsibilities of Chief Psychiatrist, as appointed by Governor in Council, for administration of the Mental Health Act 2016. The Chief Psychiatrist leads and manages the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist, within the Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch. The role supports clinical excellence and safety and quality improvement within Queensland's mental health alcohol and other drug services.

The successful person

You will have:

  • High level expertise in mental health service provision and clinical governance with a good knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2016,
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and management in mental health alcohol and other drugs strategic, clinical and legislative policy, and cross-sector collaboration, and to build and maintain appropriate relationships with team members, employees, stakeholders and the broader community.
  • Ability to identify, investigate, analyse and resolve individual patient and systemic health service issues including opportunities for continuous improvement, and to influence the development and implementation of complex state and national reforms.
  • High level communication, negotiation and liaison skills with a record of success in working across government, private and non-government sectors, and with consumers and carers, particularly in relation to sensitive issues and complex ideas and information.

The position requires the incumbent to travel frequently by air and road. A current “C” class drivers licence is essential.
