Our client is a prominent global bank with an expanding presence in the Australian market. This newly created role offers the chance to lead the second line of defence (2LOD) for Operational Risk within the Australian branch. Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), you’ll oversee independent risk oversight and reporting, with opportunities to cross-train in Market & Liquidity Risk.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with business and support units to monitor operational risk management effectiveness, acting as a liaison with 1LOD Ops Risk Lead.
• Advise, guide, and train units on operational risk matters, ensuring compliance with risk management structures, processes, and local policy adaptations.
• Perform gap analyses on new or updated regulatory requirements and their impact on the branch’s operational framework.
• Maintain and align local risk policies with global standards.
• Engage with management on risk issues, reviewing metrics, processes, and risk events (e.g., RCSA, KRIs), and work with cross-functional teams to address risks effectively.
• Assess and review proposed action plans, ensuring they address root causes and mitigate risk.
• Contribute to major change initiatives, offering input to minimise operational risks in new services, products, and outsourcing.
• Assess operational risk resiliency across key business areas and flag emerging trends to senior management.
• Promote risk awareness through training, best practice sharing, and lessons learned.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders, regulators, and senior leadership to ensure compliance with risk management frameworks and regulatory requirements, while contributing to the continued growth of the Australian operations.

Experience & Qualifications:

• At least 5 years of experience in Operational Risk (Line 2) within Corporate/Institutional Banking.
• Experience in a global banking environment is preferred.
• Degree or professional qualification in a business or quantitative field.
• Expertise in risk control, reporting, and compliance, with project management and process optimisation experience.
• Familiarity with risk management systems such as Murex and Finacle, as well as SQL and Visual Basic is advantageous.
