Your working hours and days will fluctuate depending upon the duration of camps and participant numbers. A typical day may see you working 8 to 10 hours where on occasions with the larger camps you may do a 12 hour day. Most days you will start around 6:30 AM in the morning, with a 2-hour break either in the morning or afternoon and then finishing up at approximately 7:00 PM. You will be working 5 days per week, usually having two consecutive days off during the week.
There are several essential ‘must haves’ required for the role which include;
Camp Coordinator - Working with Children
As the camp accommodates mainly primary and secondary aged students, experience with working with large groups of children is desired, although not mandatory. On a daily basis you will require the confidence and know how in coordinating, directing and speaking to large groups of children.
Being familiar with or having the confidence to learn quickly how children and teenagers interact in large groups and the strategies deployed in their management such as gaining their trust and respect in order to be an effective leader is a skill that we are seeking.
Please Note: A current Australian Working with Children Check (WWC) is mandatory to be successful for the role.
Camp Coordinator - Passion for the ocean, water safety and physical fitness
On a daily basis you will be getting into the ocean and managing large groups of children and teenagers in activities such as snorkelling. This requires physical fitness, stamina, ocean awareness and safety.
Our client has specifically requested that we seek an individual that has a passion for the ocean, ideally with a good knowledge of ocean safety or surf lifesaving. The successful applicant will possess or be able to pass a Community Surf Rescue surf lifesaving certificate as well as possessing a up to date and valid Senior First Aid certificate.
As you will be working with and leading impressionable audiences, its important you are committed to modelling your own general health and fitness ideals.
Camp Utility – Responsibilities
As mentioned, the Camp Utility will be working approximately 38 hours per week where the main responsibilities include;
- Guest Cooking
- Camp Cleaning
- Camp Maintenance
- Backup for Life Guard Duties
Camp Utility - Cooking
There is nothing more that makes children or teenagers grumpy, lack focus and misbehave than not getting their meals on time. A main part of the role is assisting in preparing meals for the camp which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our client will provide training and over the many years of operating the camp they have got food preparation down to a fine art where it is “self-serve” style catering which requires minimal preparation, serving and clean-up.
We are not necessarily seeking a candidate that has experience in working in a role where they have cooked for large numbers of people, rather an individual that has a passion for cooking that has a good working knowledge of meal preparation especially in relation to the cooking basics / cooking “common sense”, such as food hygiene & safety, quantities, using ovens and grills, timing, serving and clean-up.
If selected for the position you will be required to complete an online Food Handling and Safety course provided by the Shire of Carnarvon.

You need to have the ability to clean efficiently and thoroughly where you will be able to pick up the tricks of the trade such as using high pressure hoses and bulk cleaning products.
Camp Utility – Maintenance
When not busy with cooking or cleaning there is always camp maintenance which can range from sweeping up common areas, replacing shower heads, clearing blocked drains or toilets, tent maintenance and gardening.
Camp Utility – Lifeguard
Although not mandatory having the Camp Utility be able to assist the Camp Manager and Camp Supervisor in Lifeguard duties is a value ad. This usually occurs when the camp guests have free time where a large proportion of the students will go down to the beach for swimming and snorkelling and having an extra set of eyes for Lifeguard duties is beneficial.
