The Human Ethics Team is a dedicated office that supports students and staff in conducting ethical research. They ensure compliance with rigorous ethical standards while enabling high-quality research. The team provides expert advice, facilitates ethics applications, and manages post-approval reporting and project amendments. Additionally, the team support the University's three Human Ethics Committees, ensuring efficient reviews that uphold research integrity.
The Opportunity
Are you passionate about upholding ethical standards in research and do you have a keen eye for detail? We are seeking an experienced Human Ethics Officer to join our team for 28 hours per week. Your role is pivotal in promoting ethical research and contributing to impactful and responsible studies across the University.
As a Human Ethics Officer, you will oversee the day-to-day administration of human research ethics and support ethics committees to ensure smooth and effective review processes. You will prepare comprehensive reports, submissions, briefings, and correspondence related to human research ethics. Beyond administration, you'll provide expert guidance and support to our ethics committees, deliver training, and foster strong relationships with stakeholders. You will significantly contribute to the University's ethics management framework, ensuring our practices are benchmarked against the best in Australia and internationally. Additionally, you will work closely with the Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee to promote and develop our research ethics program, ensuring that ethical research practices are well understood and embraced by all researchers.
This is a part-time (28 hours per week), fixed-term opportunity until 31 December 2025. You will be based at Western’s Penrith Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.

About You
You have a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in ethics administration or a related field, with a strong understanding of national and international research ethics trends. You excel in supporting formal committees, analysing and solving problems, and producing timely reports. Your ability to manage complex processes and competing deadlines is proven, and you have advanced skills in electronic communications and document management systems. You work independently, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive issues with ease. Your excellent interpersonal skills enable you to effectively liaise with staff, students, and external agencies, demonstrating strong negotiation and complaint resolution abilities.

Remuneration Package: HEW Level 7 $99,362 to $107,174 p.a. (comprising Salary of $83,962 to $90,563 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading)
Note - the above salary range is 0.8 FTE of the full-time equivalent rate
