About Us

The Department of Transport and Planning brings together all transport modes to design, plan, build, and operate Victoria's transport system. The Building Policy and Reform Division oversees the state's building system, leads reforms, and advises on building and plumbing policies. It plays a key role in the administration of critical Acts, such as the Building Act 1993 and Cladding Safety Victoria Act 2020.

Job description:

About the Role
As a Policy Officer, you will join a high-performing team focused on delivering key government priorities to reform the building system. You will play a critical role in improving outcomes for the building industry, practitioners, and consumers, with an emphasis on housing and Modern Methods of Construction.

In this dynamic role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing policy options and assisting with regulatory drafting
  • Preparing briefings and correspondence for Ministers and executives
  • Collaborating with government, industry, and consumer stakeholders
  • Supporting the development of innovative policy initiatives that align with government priorities for the building and plumbing sectors.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

  • Contribute, as part of a team, to support the development, review and evaluation of complex and innovative policy options, including projects that deliver the government's priorities.
  • Develop policy options that are factual, accurate and suitable for their audience, and contribute to the development of policy initiatives that deliver the government's priorities for the building and plumbing industries and the architectural profession, in Victoria.
  • Ensure policy and regulatory advice is delivered in a timely manner and is effective in achieving the required outcome.
  • Maintain effective relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues, the Department's executives and internal and external stakeholders to support government and business unit priorities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to build effective relationships, monitor stakeholder satisfaction, and address issues constructively. They will also have experience in policy design and development, with the ability to draft policies and business cases, conduct critical data analysis, and gather relevant evidence. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential, particularly the ability to resolve complex issues by interpreting existing guidelines or performing in-depth analysis. Additionally, the candidate must be able to communicate effectively, preparing and delivering clear, logical presentations to diverse audiences, ensuring information is conveyed in a succinct and impactful manner.

Qualifications and Experience

Desirable

  • A tertiary qualification in law, public policy, economics or a related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Experience in the development and amendment of legislation and/or regulations in a State or Commonwealth public service setting is highly desirable.
