The National Parks and Wildlife Service has a great opportunity for a Team Leader Ranger to lead programs that support conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna, and Aboriginal heritage and visitor experiences across the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

About the Role

The Team Leader Ranger (TLR) is an integral role leading a team of professional Rangers and is responsible for supporting and delivering the agency’s conservation and land management objectives and tasks. The role is highly diverse and includes a mix of office based and field work across National Parks in the Kanangra Area of Blue Mountains Branch. The TLR is expected to have a broad understanding of all the Area’s projects and be able to provide advice and assistance as required.

The TLR reports directly to the Area Manager and is responsible for supervising and leading a team of Rangers. The TLR is part of an area management team and supports the Area Manager to achieve conservation and community outcomes. The TLR must ensure information flow, planning and reporting relevant to the field operations of the Area and manages internal and external projects involving staff and contractors.

About You

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about conservation, land management and working collaboratively. Your project planning skills will be key in juggling and meeting competing priorities, while your ability to motivate and influence your team will be the key to achieving outcomes in a busy and changing environment. To be successful in the role, you will also have:

  • Experience in conservation and land management
  • Strong leadership skills to manage a diverse team in multiple locations
  • Strong facilitation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • High attention to detail and great communication skills
  • Expert project planning skills and discipline to ensure due process is followed
  • Sound IT capabilities, particularly in databases, common MS Office software and some GIS experience
  • Experience and skills environmental assessment.

Skills and experience in fire management, pest and weed control, threatened species protection, visitor management and compliance would be highly desirable

Essential requirements

  • Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent.

This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places. Applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles. The applicant must pass the task based fitness assessment to a moderate level within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and annually thereafter.

The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
