Senior Financial Accountant
Energy Queensland Group
Posted 11 days ago
Your future is Energy Queensland:
Energy Queensland, and our operational brands: Energex, Ergon Energy Network, Ergon Retail and Yurika, are at the frontline of progress in the energy industry. As Australia’s largest government-owned electricity organisation, we serve people and communities across the state and beyond. Here, you’ll help us deliver reliable energy solutions for our two million customers.
This is a fixed-term, full-time opportunity until March 2027 based at our Newstead Office in Brisbane.
Your opportunity:
As a Senior Financial Accountant, you play a key role in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of our financial reporting. Sitting within the External Reporting and Policy team, you’re responsible for a broad range of reporting requirements, including:
- Regulatory reporting to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER);
- Statutory reporting to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC);
- Whole-of-Government financial reporting to Queensland Treasury via Tridata system; and
- ABS reporting.
You also prepare Board and Committee papers on key financial matters, such as Asset Valuations and Key Audit Matters, ensuring our senior stakeholders have the insights they need to make informed decisions.
Another big part of your role involves working closely with external auditors, particularly the Queensland Audit Office, to ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards. Internally, you collaborate with teams across the business, providing guidance on complex accounting matters, including capital expenditure decisions and financial policy interpretation.
Your role is more than just crunching numbers – it’s about translating financial data into meaningful insights, ensuring compliance, and shaping financial policy at a high level. If you enjoy technical problem-solving, stakeholder engagement, and navigating complex financial regulations, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
With EQL’s regulatory determination process underway, it’s a great time to join us and gain firsthand experience in the evolving energy industry and its financial frameworks.
Your remuneration starts from $158k per annum + 14.75% super for a 9-day fortnight, and from $179k per annum + 14.75% super for a 10-day fortnight.
What’s on offer?
At Energy Queensland, we believe in supporting every aspect of your career and personal life. Here’s what you can expect:
- Flexibility that works: Flexible working arrangements, including up to 50% work-from-home options for applicable roles.
- Leave for real life: Access to additional health and wellbeing, culture and diversity leave options.
- Grow as you go: Opportunities to develop professionally through training, leadership programs and full access to LinkedIn Learning.
You’re a seasoned financial accountant with a wealth of experience in financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and government reporting. You have a strong technical foundation and the ability to step into a complex environment, adding value from day one.
Specifically, we’re looking for:
- A CA or CPA qualification – this is a must.
- A background in government financial reporting, whether from a government-owned corporation (GOC) or a state or federal government department. While candidates from private enterprise are welcome, experience in government or regulated environments is advantageous.
- Proven experience in statutory and regulatory reporting, including AER Regulatory Information Notices (RINs), ASIC financial statement reporting, and whole-of-government reporting via Tridata to Queensland Treasury.
- Familiarity with asset valuation, capital expenditure decisions (CAPEX/OPEX), and liaising with external auditors – particularly the Queensland Audit Office (QAO).
- The ability to interpret Australian Accounting Standards and provide practical financial policy advice to internal stakeholders.
Given the fixed-term nature of the role, we’re looking for an experienced professional who can hit the ground running. If you thrive in a role where you can solve complex problems, collaborate with key stakeholders, and drive meaningful financial insights, you’ll be a great fit for our team.
What matters most? For us, it’s our values: We’re Safe – We Belong – We Grow – We Deliver. If you’re going to be a part of our team, these should matter to you, too.
