The Job!

As a frontline Child Protection Practitioner/Senior Child Protection Practitioner (P1/P2) you form part of a dedicated team of professionals delivering integrated statutory and non-statutory welfare services to vulnerable children and families. Depending upon your professional experience your duties may include assessing individual, family and community issues, applying appropriate methods of intervention, delivering case work and case management services, undertaking statutory responsibilities and exercising delegations under the Care and Protection of Children Act.

To be successful, you will have a tertiary qualification which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Community Workers Association or the Australian Psychological Society or equivalent tertiary qualifications. Your strong understanding of the principles and functions of delivering statutory and non-statutory welfare services, conducting strength based assessments, developing and delivering effective interventions, and demonstrated capacity to interpret and apply complex legislation will contribute to your success in the role. In addition, you will have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, family and community structures, with the ability to communicate and work in a culturally safe manner.

The East Arnhem region is known for its beautiful beaches, rich cultural history and relaxed lifestyle. The town of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula is the largest centre in the region, the main service and business hub for the area, and has a population of around 4,000 people.

There are more than 100 homelands throughout the region, with populations ranging from 10 to 200 people.

There are a few small towns in the region, such as Nhulunbuy and Yirrkala, but most live in remote communities.

Groote Eylandt is a remote island off the coast of the Northern Territory on the Gove Peninsula.

The island is home to seven indigenous communities made up of 14 clans.

The largest communities are Angurugu and Umbakumba, located on Groote Eylandt; the Milyakburra, located on Bickerton Island; and there are four satellite communities, 4 Mile, Malkala, Little Paradise, and Bartalumba Bay, located close to mainstream services.
