Legal Counsel - Australian Energy Producer
An exciting opportunity for a 2-5 year PAE lawyer to join a high-profile Australian Energy producer, based in the Brisbane CBD.
About the Opportunity
This role is ideal for a lawyer passionate about broadening their legal and professional skills, with a keen interest in the energy sector and the important role the business plays in Australia’s energy landscape.
It offers the opportunity to work alongside industry-leading legal professionals and contribute to major energy projects.
What You’ll Be Doing
The successful candidate will provide a wide range of legal services, supporting key commercial, corporate, regulatory, and property matters.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Providing legal support for commercial affairs, including joint ventures, project development, and acquisitions & divestments.
- Handling corporate matters associated with the company’s Australian operations.
- Advising on tenure and real property matters, regulatory approvals, native title, cultural heritage, and employment issues.
- Protecting the company’s interests and reputation through sound legal advice and strategic decision-making.
You will work closely with senior legal professionals who will mentor and support your ongoing development.
This role requires a proactive approach to legal risk management, working in a fast-paced environment where timely and practical legal advice is crucial.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality legal advice on complex commercial and regulatory matters.
- Support project development initiatives, acquisitions, and divestments.
- Manage legal risks related to tenure, land access, native title, and environmental approvals.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders, external counsel, and joint venture partners.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments relevant to the energy sector.
- Maintain and share legal expertise through training and development initiatives.
What They’re Looking For
The business is seeking a highly motivated lawyer with the following qualifications and experience:
- Joint ventures, project development, or acquisitions & divestments.
- Australian corporate law.
- Mining and petroleum tenure and regulatory frameworks in Queensland.
- Regulatory approvals and land access for petroleum and mining projects.
- Native title and cultural heritage law and practice as they relate to energy and resources projects.
- Strong commercial acumen, problem-solving abilities, and drafting skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent).
- Admission as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction and a current (or immediately eligible) Queensland Practicing Certificate.
- Approximately 2–5 years of post-admission legal experience.
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
