Compliance Specialist and Legal Counsel
Are you a lawyer who has been practising for a few years and is keen to consider a change? Perhaps a move to a role located within a business, as part of a supportive and experienced in-house team, to learn a new set of skills that are transferable to other businesses and jurisdictions?

Joining our team means you'll be part of something that really matters. As our Compliance Specialist and Legal Counsel, you will be based in Bentley, and responsible for:

  • Leading the design, implementation and management of Horizon Power's compliance operating model (approximately 80% of the role); and
  • The provision of legal advice and support to your colleagues in the business across a broad range of areas (approximately 10 to 20% of the role)

This is a permanent full-time position that will suit someone who has significant experience in professional services law firm and is interested in moving to an in-house role.

We require a self-motivator who has strong written and verbal communication skills, is able to juggle competing priorities and can find practical solutions to problems. Your role will include:

  • Leading the design, implementation and management of Horizon Power's "Hub & Spoke" compliance operating model
  • Overseeing the creation, upkeep, and implementation of the annual compliance and assurance programs, as well as managing the execution of senior management and executive annual attestations
  • Preparing and presenting papers summarising new legislation and policies and their potential impact on Horizon Power to Executive Planning meetings and Board sub-committees (Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARMC) and Sustainability and People Committee (SPC))
  • Serving as the Privacy Officer, which involves addressing business queries related to privacy matters, coordinating responses to data breaches, liaising with external legal counsel as needed, ensuring the deployment of mandatory training to relevant business units on privacy issues, and monitoring applicable legislation to communicate new requirements to the affected parts of the business
  • Providing legal advice and support on discrete matters including contracts, disputes and the business' legislative obligations and which may involve briefing external panel law firms as required
  • Supporting the broader Audit and Risk Function in managing activities within crisis management, enterprise risk management, governance advice and internal audit coordination/reporting

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law and a current WA Practising Certificate
  • Demonstrated experience working with legislation and/or case authorities and advising clients on application of the law
  • Strong drafting skills in the preparation of letters of advice to clients and/or preparing legislation or policies
  • Highly developed communication skills including drafting letter and emails to clients and supervising partners, demonstrated experience communicating verbally and in writing directly with clients
  • Strong presentation and reporting skills including delivering presentations to colleagues/clients and/or sharing advice with clients
