The role
This is an exciting permanent opportunity to join a team responsible for one of the largest and most diverse legislative portfolios in Queensland Government. As a Senior Policy Officer, you will have the opportunity to support legislative reforms on primary and subordinate laws across a wide variety of health-related areas. Key responsibilities:
- Assist with primary and subordinate legislation projects across the health portfolio, individually and as part of a team. This includes liaising with departmental subject matter experts, preparing Cabinet submissions, briefings, drafting instructions and explanatory materials; instructing Parliamentary Counsel; consulting internal and external stakeholders and developing written materials to support introduction, Parliamentary Committee and debate processes (for primary legislation) and Governor-in-Council consideration (for subordinate legislation).
- Prepare high quality and timely briefing notes, ministerial communications, reports, submissions and correspondence about legislative projects and issues.
- Undertake legislative policy reviews, analyse and report on submissions, and develop briefing and issues papers requiring research.
The successful person
You will have demonstrated:
- the functions and operations of Government, with particular reference to Parliamentary, Cabinet and Executive Council processes involved in developing legislation;
- Health portfolio legislation; and
- the organisation, functions and policies of Queensland Health.
- Ability to research legislative policy issues of a complex nature and the capacity to provide accurate and timely advice and options to decision makers in relation to these issues.
- High-level written communication skills, including the ability to research, prepare and contribute to policy documents, discussion papers, submissions and explanatory material for the legislative process.
- High-level verbal communication skills, including negotiating and presenting complex concepts and advice to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders.
