Duration: Casual (weekdays and weekends), fixed term until 30 June 2025

Who are we?

Established in 1991, Danila Dilba Health Service (DDHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation committed to providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services and community development within the Biluru (Aboriginal) community of the Yilli Rreung (Greater Darwin) Region in the Northern Territory.

We work to address the social determinants of health including the broader issues that affect our people?s health, through evidence-based research and public advocacy. We also work to empower individuals, families, and communities to optimise their health.

About the role

To provide comprehensive primary health care (PHC) to young people at Holtze Youth Detention Centre (HYDC) in a forensic setting and advocate for the well-being of young people in detention with integrated and culturally appropriate care, promoting positive outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to all acute health issues and emergency presentations within HYDC including ?Code Blues? (as per Department of Corrections policy) for youth, visitors and/or staff members.
  • Be a first point of contact for youth at DDHS HYDC Clinic including completing an initial new reception review, diagnosis, treatment, and referrals as necessary.
  • Provide early detection, preventions, and management of mental health issues, including at risk episodes with guidance from a psychiatrist.
  • Provide day to day health care services activities within the context of Primary Health Care in a professional, confidential, and culturally safe manner.
  • Deliver services in accordance with DDHS policy and procedures guided by CARPA standard treatment manual and applicable legislation and regulations.

To be successful you will need:

Essential

  • Bachelor of Nursing and/or Certificate IV in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice).
  • Current registration as an AHP/Registered Nurse with AHPRA.
  • Current accredited immunisation certificate recognised in the NT.
  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health (environment, economic and social inequalities) that have a profound impact on the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated ability to use culturally sensitive ways to ensure improved client access to DDHS and/or other health services.
  • Proven teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to constructively negotiate outcomes with a diverse range of people and service providers.
  • High level of personal resilience and flexibility with the ability to deal with challenging situations.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, especially in the use of client information systems or similar.

Desirable

  • Current Advanced Life Support certificate.
  • Post graduate qualifications or experience in emergency nursing, mental health nursing and/or primary health care.
