Are you an experienced buyer with a passion for sourcing, pricing, and developing product ranges?

The Good Grocer is looking for a highly motivated and strategic Group Buyer and Merchandising Specialist to join our team and help shape the future of our stores.

This is a full-time, permanent position with plenty of opportunities for professional growth within our innovative and supportive team.

As part of our dynamic team, you’ll be responsible for sourcing and securing products for The Good Grocer Stores, managing categories, and building long-term relationships with suppliers. This key role will ensure that our product range not only meets customer demand but also strengthens our position as a leading food destination. You’ll also support the development and execution of The Good Grocer Collection, contributing to a unique market offering.

In this pivotal role, we are particularly seeking someone with fresh food experience in service departments such as bakery, deli, and ready-to-eat produce. You’ll oversee the overall range, ensuring we deliver exceptional offerings in these departments that meet customer needs and elevate our reputation for top quality, convenient fresh food.

In collaboration with the operations team, you will provide category plans and merchandising support that aligns with our commercial strategy and business priorities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Competitive Pricing & Promotions: Develop price ladders and promotional programmes within the group pricing strategy to ensure market relevance and profitability.
  • Supplier & Relationship Management: Build strong relationships with suppliers to secure quality products, competitive pricing, and exclusive offers.
  • Range Development: Curate a balanced product range, including core and market-specific selections for all stores.
  • Brand & Innovation: Support the growth of The Good Grocer Collection, ensuring first-to-market positioning for new products.
  • Store & Merchandising Support: Collaborate with Store Managers and Department Managers to optimise product presentation, pricing, and merchandising.
  • Sustainability & Local Sourcing: Champion local suppliers and sustainable options to align with customer preferences.
  • Operational Efficiency, Rebate & Group Buy Management: Identify cost-saving opportunities, manage rebate programmes, and oversee group buys to enhance business performance.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work with all departments to drive productivity, improve market positioning, and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Performance & Budget Accountability: Ensure departmental budgets and KPIs are met.
  • Strategic Growth & Market Insights: Use consumer data and market trends to drive category growth and maintain a competitive edge.

We’re looking for someone with a strong background in product sourcing, range development, and supplier management, ideally within the retail or food industry. Your ability to manage relationships, negotiate competitive pricing, and identify market opportunities will be key to your success. You should have a passion for food, innovation, and sustainability, and be driven by achieving business goals while maintaining high standards of product quality and customer satisfaction.

Skills required:

  1. Excellent customer service skills and a high level of personal presentation.
  2. Demonstrated negotiation and relationship building skills to support the ability to make excellent business decisions.
  3. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate with diverse people. This is demonstrated in the ability to understand and execute a business contract.
  4. Experience in leading and coaching product to market and merchandising skills in a supermarket environment.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of consumer trends and price sensitivity.
  6. Ability to interpret financial data and statistics to make informed buying decisions.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge in managing a range and pricing frame to meet consumer needs, manage the tail and launch new products.
  8. A polite, calm and professional telephone manner.
  9. Excellent computer skills with sound knowledge of Microsoft applications (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel)
  10. Demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise tasks, work unsupervised and effectively under pressure, solve problems, handle constant interruptions and manage a busy and varied workload.
  11. Current Western Australian ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence,
