About the organisation

Pika Wiya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation is an exciting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service which offers comprehensive primary health, social support and training services to Aboriginal people in Port Augusta, with Clinics located at Dartmouth Street in Port Augusta, Davenport, Copley and Nepabunna communities and provides services to other areas within our catchment area. Our health service provides a culturally appropriate preventative and curative health service to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Purpose of the role

Aboriginal Health Practitioners (AHP) are responsible to the Clinic Manager for the provision of primary health care services that supports health and medical objectives of the organisation.

The successful applicants will:

  • deliver high clinical standards that contribute to the accreditation process.
  • work as part of a team to support families and individuals to improve overall social, emotional, health and wellbeing.
  • provide support through working with individual families and/or individuals by increasing skills and confidence in self-management, goal setting and planning for improved health and well-being.
Key accountabilities

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner is expected to carry out client consultations, provide clinical and routine treatments and refer clients to General Practitioners and/or other clinicians when clinical assistance or confirmation of diagnosis is needed. The primary focus of the role is to perform health checks as a primary prevention tool by ensuring that all clients have a check every year.

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will assist in the delivery of Primary Health Care Services to Aboriginal Clients and or their families in a clinical setting.

Duties will include:

  • Conduct screening and health checks prior to clients seeing a doctor, and record details of consultation in the patient information recall system and electronic notes and organise follow up referrals as necessary.
  • Provide general health care assessments and management of a broad range of clinical problems, in consultation with RNs, GPs or other clinicians as required.
  • Promote health awareness, education and value of compliance.
  • Apply appropriate general first aid techniques and provide/assist accident and emergency care including emergency first aid, stabilisation until ambulance arrives.
  • Always demonstrate safe working practices.
  • Work according to the endorsed AHP Minimum Scope of Practice Document.
  • Participate in medication management as outlined by Pika Wiya Health Service policy and procedure document.
  • Respect clients and treat all information about the client with strict confidentiality.
  • Establish and maintain links with Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander groups/communities that encourage and support the increased use of health services, including health checks as part of early detection, intervention, and management.
Essential minimum requirements

Education/Qualifications

  • Certificate IV or Diploma Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice).
  • Eligible to register or already registered as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Holds or eligible to apply for a current Medicare Provider number.
  • Holds current First Aid Certificate which includes CPR proficiency.

Experience

  • Previous experience working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation
  • Experienced and proficient in the use of Communicare patient information system or similar.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal consumers.
Special Conditions
  • Current National Police Check.
  • DCSI Working with Children check.
  • DCSI Aged Care Sector check.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID -19.
  • SA Current Driver’s License
