Currently, there are around 4.3 million Australians with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 600,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian.

The National Disability and Insurance Agency (NDIA) is seeking candidates to fill an ongoing EL1 Assistant Director Accessible Communications - Delivery and Performance vacancy.

The Accessible Communications Team entails a diverse team of people who has a passion around ensuring quality accessible communication is front and centre in everything we do. Duties of the role may include but not limited to:

  • Developing effective and efficient service delivery processes aligned with the National Disability 2021-2025 Strategy Standards, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2) and NDIA minimum standards of accessible communications.
  • Leading the delivery of the Agency’s internal translation capability, supporting the creation of accessible print, design, digital, tagging, Easy Read, plain English and other accessible communication products.
  • Leading and managing procurement activities, supporting the external translation of the Agency’s communications products into accessible formats.
  • Managing continuous improvement of key deliverables, including quality service delivery standards, contractual arrangements, measuring performance, prioritising, and addressing requests for quality accessible communication support and services in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of high-quality and innovative accessible and inclusive communication materials that improve the quality of communications products within the NDIA.
  • Collaborating and testing current and emerging solutions through the use of various accessibility testing tools and assistive technologies whilst coordinating ongoing engagement activities with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current developments and trends in accessibility and digital technologies and how they may assist the Agency achieve best practice.
  • Leading a positive team culture through inclusive and collaborative management practices and building staff capability.

What we’re looking for in our ideal candidate:

  • Collaborative, adaptive leadership qualities with a passion for continuous improvement and a growth mindset.
  • Experience in leading, mentoring, and developing a diverse team of accessible communication professionals.
  • Qualification in communications with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in creating and improving effective and efficient service delivery processes whilst managing continuous improvement of key deliverables, setting quality standards, measuring performance, prioritising and addressing requests for quality accessible communication support and services.
  • Knowledge of requirements and standards for creating and delivering accessible print, design, digital, tagging, Easy Read, plain English and other accessible communication Products – incorporating best practice co-design principles.
  • Experience in managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders and handling procurement / contracts with external suppliers.
  • Knowledge of National Disability 2021-2025 Strategy Standards, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2) and NDIA minimum standards of accessible communications.
  • Knowledge of current developments and trends in accessibility and digital technologies.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by Australians with disabilities

While this role is ideally performed from Adelaide SA, Brisbane QLD, Geelong VIC, Perth WA, Richmond VIC, Robina QLD and Surry Hills NSW, remote working arrangements may be considered. We intend to fill this role in an ongoing capacity, however non-ongoing roles up to 12 months with the possibility of extension up to 2 years may be offered.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police History check, Worker Screening check and/or Working with Children Check (where required) and provide evidence of Australian Citizenship.
