Use your legal skills to make a positive difference for investors and consumers in the Australian financial system.

A future with ASIC means that your work will contribute to ASIC's vision for a fair, strong and efficient financial system for all Australians. We value what you will bring. We value those with sharp, analytical minds who are open to challenging the way things are done.

Our team

ASIC's Enforcement and Compliance Group (ECG) oversees initial inquiries, compliance, and enforcement action across multiple sectors. In 2024-25, ECG began over 240 investigations, and obtained over $100 million in civil penalties and multiple criminal convictions and banning orders.

Enforcement Inquiries and Compliance (EIC) teams handle early-stage misconduct investigations and decide whether cases advance to further investigation or seek administrative or compliance outcomes.

Investigations teams manage complex cases through the entire investigation process, conduct related civil litigation, and support criminal prosecutions conducted by the Commonwealth DPP.

Senior Lawyer positions are currently open in both Investigations and EIC teams. This recruitment will create a pool to fill current and future vacancies within ECG.

The role

As a Senior Lawyer, you will take a leading role in investigations of suspected misconduct, complex civil litigation and obtaining enforcement outcomes. You will have the opportunity to participate in varied, interesting and impactful work. More specifically, you will:

  • Strategically plan, scope, manage and direct complex investigations within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Take a leading role in conducting and supporting enforcement action including civil litigation, criminal prosecutions and/or administrative action.
  • Identify and advise on legal issues arising during investigations and litigation, including evidence, remedies and the exercise of ASIC's statutory powers.
  • Gather evidence through compulsory notices and examinations, interviews and search warrants, and prepare and settle witness statements and affidavits.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced staff.

Experience in the conduct of complex civil or criminal litigation is necessary for lawyers in Investigations teams. Experience in industries regulated by ASIC including superannuation, insurance, credit, banking, wealth management/financial advisory or insolvency will be well regarded.

About you

As the ideal candidate you will be inquisitive, have an analytical mind set and be comfortable working with complex information in a changing environment. You will be proactive and outcome-driven, with the ability to see how your work contributes to the bigger picture. With a consultative and collaborative interpersonal style, you will enjoy working as part of a large, multi-skilled team.

In addition, you will have:

  • Legal qualifications and a current practising certificate.
  • Significant, senior experience in conducting civil or criminal litigation (Investigations roles).
  • Significant, senior experience in industries regulated by ASIC including superannuation, insurance, credit, banking, wealth management/financial advisory or insolvency (EIC roles).
  • Familiarity with the laws administered by ASIC, such as the Corporations Act, the National Consumer Credit regime and the ASIC Act.
  • Demonstrated ability to use e-discovery tools to review, interrogate and manage large data volumes.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience in guiding and coaching other team members.

To work with us, you need to be an Australian citizen and be prepared to complete an ASIC Suitability and Baseline Assessment which is issued by ASIC's Security team.

What we offer you

At ASIC, you'll be part of a team working on complex and meaningful matters that protect consumers, support fair markets and strengthen Australia's financial system. ASIC invests in their people and values a strong cultural environment. Benefits for you include:

  • 20 days of annual leave, plus additional paid leave during the Christmas closedown and 18 days of personal leave
  • Flexible work arrangements and part-time options
  • A supportive culture where we celebrate wins and express appreciation
  • Ongoing learning, development and career growth opportunities.
