Key role delivering of one of the most significant threatened-fauna and ecological restoration projects in New South Wales history for NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique key position leading the delivery of one of the most significant threatened-fauna and ecological restoration projects in New South Wales history through the establishment and operation of a feral predator–free area in Yathong Nature Reserve (NR). The Reserve is 130km north of Hillston, 200km west of Cobar and 160km east of Ivanhoe. The work roster will include working 5 days out of 7 days per week. A hybrid work model which requires working away and staying overnight for multiple consecutive nights on site at Yathong Nature Reserve. The hybrid model will be based at Cobar and require commuting to Yathong Nature Reserve where you will then stay on site for up to 8 nights consecutively with generous field and incidental allowances. The service is currently able to provide a single modular room with ensuite - air-conditioned accommodation and communal kitchen and laundry facilities. There is no family accommodation available on the reserve to date.
This rewarding and diverse role will see you working closely with the Field Supervisor to manage various teams, undertaking procurement and purchasing as required and ensuring programs such as infrastructure construction and feral animal control are implemented in accordance with approved plans, specifications, with safety, on time and within budget. On a day to day basis, this will involve leading and supervising staff and contractors in field construction (fencing, vegetation management, roading and associate infrastructure) and maintenance programs that will support native conservation. Your teams will also undertake the restoration of habitat through feral animal control programs to achieve eradication of predators and herbivores (where practical) involving the use of pesticides, chemicals and firearms subject to training and certifications.
You’ll also be relied upon to use the financial and asset management systems to report on asset management and conservation outcomes. And undertake administrative activities such as collecting and recording of data and assist the project team as required.

About You
Your passion for your community and environment, coupled with a strong attention to detail and safety will be key to your success in this role. You’ll need to be comfortable operating and maintaining plant and equipment including hand tools, powered tools, spray units, water pumps, chainsaws, all-terrain vehicles, four-wheel drives and heavy plant in accordance with appropriate licences, Workcover Standards, Standard Operating Procedures, Job Safety Analyses and manufacturers guidelines to ensure relevant work safety requirements are met. You’ll enjoy working as part of a team but be able to work alone or with minimal supervision. Your fitness and enthusiasm will enable you to thrive and succeed in this diverse role.
Essential Role Requirements
- Ability to work with the Department’s statutory obligations as they apply to conservation of natural, Aboriginal and cultural heritage and resources, and willingness to exercise delegated authority for law enforcement.
- Demonstrated experience in the maintenance/construction of general facilities and grounds. Ability to supervise and carry out all duties safely in accordance with WH&S requirements.
- Ability to implement planned field and operational activities (including pest animal and plant control); and demonstrated skills and experience in fire management.
- Demonstrated administrative and organisational skills and capacity for working with various software programs, including ability to use the Agency’s financial and asset management systems.
- Relevant WorkCover Certification, ability and experience for the appropriate operation and maintenance of machinery, plant and equipment for maintenance and construction work.
- Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent, MR Drivers Licence and ability to drive 4wd vehicles, Senior First Aid Certificate, and demonstrated ability and experience in operating MR vehicles, and willingness to fly in light aircraft.
- Certification and demonstrated ability and experience in operating chainsaw to at least cross-cut level, and ability to operate and supervise in radio usage.
This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places.
Applicants must meet the requirements of a specific medical assessment) which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake the fitness test for firefighting fitness roles (i.e. moderate level Task-Based Assessment for Firefighters) within the 12-month probationary period, if relevant.
The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
