About Us?

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health Ltd was established by its founding members to provide a coordinated/integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the Moreton Bay region.

In keeping with IUIH’s Vision of healthy, strong and vibrant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities, the Birthing and Early Childhood (BECs) program delivers a unique model of maternity care that provides comprehensive and culturally informed maternal and child health services.

About the Role?

The Child Health Nurse aims to support parents, infants, and children from preconception and pregnancy through to early childhood (5 years of age) to enhance family functioning and promote childhood development and parental wellbeing, while supporting parenting capacity, entailing health promotion, education, developmental assessments and other clinical care. This role will be working across Strathpine, Morayfield, Caboolture and possibly Deception Bay and Margate.

  • Ensure care is integrated across other internal services including primary care clinics, Birthing in Our Community, Family Wellbeing Services, Australian Family Partnership Program, social health, allied health and paediatric services
  • Ensure transition of care from maternity services is coordinated and seamless and provide home visits when required
  • Provide timely parenting support and anticipatory guidance while promoting strength based parenting practices
  • Undertake growth and development assessments utilising appropriate growth charts and screening tools
  • Early infant feeding support , advice, and management
  • Ensure infants and children have a current completed 715 Health Assessment, commencing at 6 weeks of age; in addition, promote access and uptake of 715 Health Assessments by parents, siblings and caregivers
  • Facilitate access to and/or provide vaccinations according to the National Immunisation Program
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate both structured and unstructured parenting groups

About You?

  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD)
  • Valid Disability Worker Screening Check
  • AHPRA Registration as Registered Nurse or Midwife
  • Post graduate qualifications in Child and Family Health
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certificates
  • Ability to work sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, their leaders and health professionals, while respecting traditional culture, values and ways of doing business
  • Demonstrated skills and experience working with children and families in a primary care setting
  • Broad understanding of attachment and trauma informed practice

Desirable, but not mandatory:

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and /or communities
  • Immunisation Program Nurse
