About Step Ahead Psychology
At Step Ahead Psychology, our mission is to help individuals improve their well-being and build skills for managing life’s challenges—one step at a time. We value being approachable and open, authentic, reliable and consistent, honest and understanding, and genuinely collaborative.
Our approach begins with getting to know the client’s situation so we can set clear goals together. We provide a comfortable, friendly space where clients can feel safe to share their stories and we tailor evidence-based therapies into a personalised plan that fits their needs. For those who prefer a different setting, we also offer outdoor sessions that combine psychological support, gentle movement, and time in nature—walking alongside a psychologist can feel less daunting and often makes it easier to talk openly. Our services include Counselling, Assessments, EMDR, and workshops.
Position overview
Step Ahead Psychology provides individual counselling (in-person, telehealth and even walk-and-talk sessions) for clients from age 8+, supporting issues such as anxiety, depression, grief/adjustment, trauma, and life transitions. The practice also offers psychometric/cognitive assessments that inform education, employment and disability support (e.g., to investigate IQ, learning difficulties, giftedness, ADHD), and works collaboratively with GPs, schools, and NDIS participants. The psychologist’s core purpose is to deliver evidence-based assessment and therapy, translate findings into practical recommendations, and coordinate care with referrers and stakeholders.
Key tasks and responsibilities
Collect client history and behavioral observations; assess cognitive, emotional and behavioral presentations for clients (8+) to determine needs and provisional diagnoses; document findings clearly for clients and referrers.
Integrate assessment data into collaborative treatment plans that align with Step Ahead’s presenting-issue focus (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment).
Provide individual therapy in-clinic and via telehealth at all locations; offer outdoor “walk-and-talk” sessions where clinically suitable. Monitor outcomes and adjust plans.
Liaise with GPs/psychiatrists for Medicare-referred care; provide feedback to families/carers and, where relevant, other health/education stakeholders.
Prepare concise treatment summaries and letters for referrers; meet documentation requirements for Medicare items and NSW Victims Services counselling sessions.
Track client-reported outcomes and maintain currency with evidence on motivation, learning and individual differences to inform practice (ANZSCO research alignment).
Provide psycho-education to workplaces/schools and, where within scope, contribute to surveys or job-analysis style consultations.
Qualifications/Skills required
A related bachelor’s Degree or Higher
At least one year of work experience in a similar role
Holds APHRA registration
