The Marine Mechanic plays a vital role in delivering top-tier service and technical expertise to customers, ensuring that all installations, servicing, diagnostics, and repairs are carried out efficiently and to the highest standards. This position involves working on Mercury & Mercruiser engines, outboards, sterndrives, and a variety of other marine propulsion systems, with tasks ranging from pre-delivery inspections and routine maintenance to complex diagnostics and mechanical repairs.
The role requires a strong mechanical and electrical skill set, along with the ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic and fuel systems, perform water testing and sea trials, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Working from our Sydney Boathouse location, the Marine Mechanic will operate in a dynamic environment that includes workshop-based tasks, on-site repairs, and customer interactions.

Marine Engine Mechanic – Duties & Responsibilities
Pre-Delivery Inspection & Servicing: Perform thorough pre-delivery inspections, testing, and servicing of all new Mercury & Mercruiser Engines, Outboards, and Sterndrives to ensure they meet manufacturer specifications and safety standards before customer handover.
Engine Installation & Commissioning: Install, align, and commission new Mercury & Mercruiser engines in both new and second-hand boats, ensuring proper fitment, electrical connections, and compliance with safety regulations.
General Mechanical Repairs & Maintenance: Diagnose and repair marine engines, including routine servicing, troubleshooting, and overhauls to extend engine life and improve performance.
Electrical & Electronic Systems: Perform wiring, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical and electronic systems, including battery management, ignition systems, gauges, navigation equipment, and onboard diagnostics.
Hydraulic & Fuel System Repairs: Maintain and repair hydraulic steering and trim systems, fuel pumps, injectors, and fuel delivery systems to optimize engine efficiency and safety.
Vessel Maintenance & Security: Assist in securing and maintaining vessels in the workshop, marina, and dry storage areas, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety guidelines.
Water Testing & Performance Evaluation: Conduct Sea trials and performance testing on repaired or newly installed engines to ensure proper functionality and customer satisfaction.
Inventory & Parts Management: Assist in managing spare parts, tools, and consumables inventory, ensuring proper stock levels and efficient workshop operations.
Compliance & Safety Adherence: Follow all workplace health and safety regulations, environmental policies, and manufacturer guidelines while performing duties.
Customer Service & Technical Support: Communicate effectively with customers, explaining repairs, service recommendations, and proper maintenance procedures to enhance customer satisfaction.
Stakeholder & Team Collaboration: Maintain positive working relationships with customers, suppliers, colleagues, and stakeholders associated with Chapman Marine Group and Sydney Boat House to ensure smooth business operations.
Qualifications & Experience Requirements:
- Trade qualification as a Marine Mechanic
- Must have minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a Marine dealership that sells pleasure boats.
- Mercury Marine Mechanic certified (An advantage).
- Current driver’s license (essential).
- Boating license (essential).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – Marine Mechanic
Fortnightly KPIs:
Billable Hours: Maintain a minimum of 87.5% of total contracted hours allocated to customer jobs, ensuring efficiency and alignment with standard job time estimates.
Job Quality & First-Time Fix Rate: Ensure that no more than 10% of completed jobs require rework or additional fixes due to workmanship.
Monthly KPIs:
Training & Certification Compliance: Stay up to date with Mercury training requirements, completing all necessary certifications and ongoing training as per manufacturer standards.
