About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Civil Lawyer – Coronial Inquests Team Leader to lead our Coronial Inquests practice in Darwin.
This role oversees a team dedicated to supporting Aboriginal people through the coronial inquest process, conducting complex litigation, mentoring staff, and contributing to systemic reform. You will also provide broader civil law services, including advice and representation across areas such as police accountability, child protection, tenancy, and discrimination.
What You Will Be Doing
- Lead and supervise the Coronial Inquests practice group
- Conduct high-level litigation, including inquests and appeals
- Mentor and develop staff across NAAJA offices
- Provide legal advice and casework in coronial and civil law matters
- Deliver advice clinics in both urban centres and remote communities
- Contribute to law reform and advocacy strategies
- Build and manage key stakeholder relationships
What You Will Bring
- Eligibility for admission in the NT and High Court of Australia
- 4+ years post-admission civil law experience, including coronial inquests
- Strong litigation, advocacy and independent practice skills
- Experience mentoring and supervising staff
- Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to travel to remote communities, including overnight stays
Other requirements:
- Ability to obtain a Working With Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
- Satisfactory criminal history check
- NT ‘C’ class driver’s licence
