About DCLS
DCLS is the only generalist legal community legal service in the NT. Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) is a free, confidential community legal service providing advice, advocacy, and support across the Northern Territory. Our services include the General Legal Service (GLS), Tenants’ Advice Service (TAS), and Seniors & Disability Rights Service (SDRS). We aim to improve fairness and justice through legal help, community education, and law reform.
About this role
The Tenancy Solicitor works in the TAS team to provide legal advice and representation for tenants in public and private housing across the NT. The role also contributes to community legal education and law reform to advance tenants’ rights and housing. This position is full time on a 12 month contract.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Practice
Provide advice, assistance, and representation to TAS clients.
·Manage client files, including legal research, drafting, and record keeping.
Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and colleagues.
Contribute to the development of TAS practice and staff skills.
Community Legal Education
· Support and deliver tenant-focused community education.
· Develop and maintain TAS legal education resources.
Law Reform
Contribute to TAS projects and new initiatives
Assist with submissions, campaigns, and stakeholder engagement.
Other Duties
Contribute to TAS projects and new initiatives.
Act in higher duties if required.
Perform other tasks as directed.
Accountability
Maintain high professional and ethical standards.
Work collaboratively as part of the TAS team.
Comply with DCLS policies and procedures.
Report to the Managing Solicitor and Principal Solicitor.
Selection Criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for an NT legal practising certificate.
2. Commitment to social justice and human rights.
3. Ability to interpret and apply law and provide sound legal advice.
4. Strong legal research, drafting, and advocacy skills.
5. Knowledge of NT tenancy law (or ability to acquire quickly).
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural competence.
7. Strong time management, organisation, and record-keeping skills.
8. Ability to work independently and in a team.
9. Proficient computer skills.
10. Willingness to travel within NT.
11. Current NT driver’s licence, Ochre Card, and national police clearance.
Desirable
Experience as a lawyer in a community or non-profit setting.
Experience in community education or training.
Salary & Benefits
SCHCADS Level 5–6, depending on experience
Above-award pay, salary packaging, superannuation
Six weeks annual leave, flexible work arrangements, and time in lieu
DCLS will consider reimbursement for interstate relocation.
