The Opportunity

On 1 February 2025, a new era for racing in Tasmania began when the newly established Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) assumed responsibility for Racing Integrity across the State. An exciting opportunity is now available for an experienced Investigator to join the TIU’s Investigations & Animal Welfare Unit.

The Investigator is responsible for conducting thorough investigations into potential breaches of racing and animal welfare regulations, preparing high-quality reports and evidence briefs, and assisting in ensuring compliance and welfare outcomes across the industry. This position may need to perform duties outside of usual business hours when required.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct risk-based, intelligence-driven investigations into potential breaches of racing and animal welfare regulations.

Carry out inspections of training and racing facilities in collaboration with the Animal Welfare team and Stewards Panel.

Respond to and assess reports of potential animal welfare concerns, escalating as required.

Interview participants, gather and secure evidence, and prepare professional reports.

Assist in out-of-competition testing and ensure sample integrity.

Contribute to the development and refinement of investigative processes and procedures.

Prepare clear and accurate briefs of evidence for inquiries, tribunals, and court proceedings.

Provide evidence at hearings and inquiries as required.

Support the Chief Racing Integrity Officer, Manager and Stewards in ensuring investigations are legally sound and procedurally accurate.

Engage professionally with industry participants, club managers, and racing stakeholders during investigations.

Liaise with external regulatory bodies such as RSPCA, Tasmanian Police, local councils, and integrity officials.

Support collaborative approaches to joint investigations and information sharing.

Work cooperatively within the Investigations team and wider Integrity Unit.

Participate in training, development, and professional learning opportunities.

Uphold high standards of ethical conduct, integrity, and animal welfare.

About You

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

Experience in conducting investigations, preferably in a regulatory, law enforcement, or racing industry context.

Strong report writing skills and ability to prepare evidence for inquiries or court.

Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or equivalent qualification (or progress toward).

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with stakeholders.

Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and integrity.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality.

Ability to work outside usual business hours if required.

Highly Desirable:

Knowledge of the Rules of Racing and relevant regulatory frameworks.
