About the Role
The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) is seeking a passionate and motivated Criminal Lawyer to join our Central Australian team.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, while building your expertise in criminal law across a wide variety of matters. You will represent clients across a broad range of criminal matters, summary, indictable and appellate before the Local and Supreme Courts. You’ll also travel to remote circuit courts, providing access to justice where it’s needed most.
About the Role
As a Criminal Lawyer at NAAJA, you will:
- Represent clients in the Local and Supreme Courts, including mentions, hearings, pleas, trials and appeals.
- Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice in criminal law matters.
- Travel to circuit courts, including overnight stays in remote communities.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, client service officers, and the broader NAAJA team to deliver excellent client outcomes.
- Contribute to law reform and advocacy initiatives that address disadvantage in the criminal justice system.
- This role requires commitment, energy, and a strong interest in criminal law, with the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging matters in Central Australia.
About you
- Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory.
- Understanding of criminal law and practice.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- High-level organisational skills and the ability to manage demanding workloads.
- Willingness to travel regularly, including to remote communities.
- A current NT driver’s licence and ability to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
