About Us

Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council is committed to strong leadership, cultural inclusion, and delivering services that empower our community. By preserving our rich heritage, we aim to enhance the wellbeing of the shire and its people.

The Opportunity

As a Qualified Plumber, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining, upgrading, and installing essential plumbing infrastructure across Council, residential, and commercial properties. A key focus of this role is delivering maintenance and upgrade works on community housing through QBuild’s funded programs, ensuring quality outcomes for local residents.

Reporting to the Manager of Building Maintenance and Upgrades, you’ll ensure compliance with safety standards and Australian regulations while supervising and mentoring apprentices.

This is a hands-on role within a collaborative team delivering significant maintenance and capital works projects.

Key Responsibilities

Community Housing Upgrades: Deliver plumbing maintenance and upgrades on community housing, with works primarily tendered and funded through QBuild programs.

Plumbing Maintenance & Infrastructure: Install, maintain, and repair water, sewerage, and stormwater systems across Council, residential, and commercial assets.

Supervision & Mentorship: Guide and support apprentices, ensuring compliance with training plans and fostering their professional growth.

Project Involvement: Work closely with QBuild, contractors, and Council teams to deliver quality projects on time and within budget.

Safety & Compliance: Apply and enforce workplace health and safety standards and Australian Plumbing Codes.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of works completed, project costs, and materials used.

Problem Solving: Quickly identify and resolve issues to meet project objectives and community needs.

About You

Mandatory: Certificate III in Plumbing and current QBCC Plumbing & Drainage Licence.

Essential: Current QLD Driver’s Licence (manual) and White Card.

Proven experience in plumbing maintenance, installation, and upgrades across residential and commercial settings.

Strong knowledge of Australian Plumbing Standards and safety compliance.

Experience supervising apprentices (or a willingness to develop this skill).

Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

What We Offer

Competitive Package: Negotiable salary based on experience, with a strong preference for local candidates. For those relocating or travelling, support with accommodation and travel will be strongly considered.

Generous Leave Entitlements: 5 weeks annual leave, 10 days personal/carer’s leave, and 12% superannuation.

Career Development: Opportunities to lead and mentor apprentices while building your own professional capability.

Community Impact: Play a direct role in upgrading and maintaining community housing and essential services.

Diverse Projects: Participate in QBuild’s $10 million annual capital works and maintenance program.
