Role Purpose:

The Nurse (EN) contributes to the life of the program by assisting in the provision of clinical nursing services, including supporting the withdrawal process and ensuring nursing assessments, treatment and care are provided to residents.

As an Enrolled Nurse, this dual role is responsible for enabling the operations of the medical office, ensuring the provision of nursing assessment, treatment and care to residents, and to ensure that best practice clinical and health care processes are applied in the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction.

Duties include but are not limited to…

  • Pharmacotherapy – script dates, changes, scales etc.
  • Residents on key medications, e.g., anti-psychotic, anti-depressant, strong pain management, to ensure informed and coordinated care.
  • Support residents through withdrawal process in non-medical environment
  • Admissions, reviewing and updating assessment information with resident, documentation and verbal handover noting any current risks factors or concerns, completing admission paperwork, opening client data systems, case management
  • Discharges, completing discharge paperwork, organise external appointments and collaborate with external services such as GP, lawyers, police, family Violence teams. Assessing, documenting and handover of any risk factors or concerns on discharges, ensuring handover
  • Participating in clinical team meetings and communicating/liaising between clinical and medical staff regarding resident medical issues, including:
  • Providing relevant education and resources to residents and staff on a range of health topics, e.g., Hepatitis C, Diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Plan, implement and/or facilitate other treatment activities such as communiqués and psychoeducation.
  • Adhering to professional and agency ethics and boundaries.
  • Assist in the supervision and collection of urine samples from residents

Who are WE looking for?
To be successful in this role, you must hold the below qualifications/experience…

  1. Registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as a Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse (Qualifications in Medication Endorsement if Enrolled Nurse).
  2. Cert IV in Alcohol or Other Drugs (or commitment to obtain one of these within 12 months of employment). *refer to Appendix A
  3. Well-developed nursing skills, including comprehensive assessment, crisis intervention, problem-solving, conflict resolution, decision-making, goal setting, case planning, development, monitoring and evaluation.
  4. Demonstrated ability to engage clients in dialogue and develop a therapeutic relationship.
  5. Excellent case management skills and the ability to work with difficult and demanding clients.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, be open to giving and receiving feedback, and recognise and resolve interpersonal conflict.
  7. Ability to take initiative and capacity to work independently, adapting to changing organisational needs.
  8. A comprehensive understanding of alcohol and drug substance abuse and an understanding of residential rehabilitation services.
  9. Strong organisational and highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) with a consultative approach to addressing issues.
  10. Ability to effectively liaise and communicate with a wide variety of agencies and individuals at various levels.

*Appendix A (AOD Competencies)

OV requires staff in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies, OV will invest in the staff’s professional development by providing them through our registered training organisation (RTO).

The competencies required in the first 12 months of employment are:

  • CHCAOD001 – Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
  • CHCAOD004 – Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD006 – Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD009 – Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans
