About Us
The International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) is a Centre within the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development. The Centre is explicitly interdisciplinary, by combining electrical engineering, computer science, signal processing, and neuroscience. ICNS’s focus is on developing Neuromorphic Engineering solutions to existing problems. The Centre has strong international partnerships within the Neuromorphic engineering community. The MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development is an interdisciplinary research centre focused on enhancing human interaction and wellbeing across the lifespan. The Opportunity
Are you passionate about cutting-edge technology that makes a difference in environmental sustainability? Western’s International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) is seeking a talented Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Sensors and AI Technologies to help shape the future of ecological and biodiversity monitoring.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will conduct independent research using a diverse array of advanced sensors and AI technology including; vision, acoustic, inertial, and olfactory, combined with machine learning frameworks to assess ecological health and species dynamics. Your work will directly inform sustainable environmental and agricultural practices.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Evaluating and integrating sensor arrays for species identification and ecological health monitoring.
  • Fusing sensory data with complementary datasets to assess population dynamics.
  • Conducting both fundamental and applied research in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Contributing to high-quality publications, technical reports, and stakeholder briefings
  • Engaging in multidisciplinary collaborations with researchers and industry partners

This is a full-time, fixed-term opportunity for 2 years based at Werrington South (Penrith) Campus although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.

Who We’re Looking For
You’ve recently completed or submitted PhD in Electrical, Computer, Chemical, or Biology-related Engineering or a closely aligned field. You bring strong expertise in sensor fusion and signal processing, with hands-on proficiency in Python, C/C++, or MATLAB, and a working knowledge of machine learning or data fusion techniques. Your track record includes delivering sensing or instrumentation systems for environmental or biological applications, and you thrive in collaborative, interdisciplinary settings. You communicate clearly, solve problems creatively, and enjoy mentoring students to support their technical and professional growth. Experience with field-deployable systems and multi-sensor integration will be highly regarded.

This position offers the opportunity to work closely with Dr Saeed Afshar and the ICNS team, contributing to pioneering work in environmental sensing, signal processing, and applied machine learning.

Remuneration Package: Academic Level A $112,718 to $136,180 p.a. (comprising Salary of $95,248 to $115,074 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading).
