The Role
Within Defence Security Operations Centre (DSOC), the Assistant Director Cyber Security Operations - Defend is responsible for the management of the Threat Hunt, Detection Engineering and Automation capabilities for Defence systems. They will work with the broader Security Operations Centre to ensure effective security for Defence’s systems. Will be required to obtain and maintain a Positive Vetting.
Duties include:
- Managing and providing subject matter expertise to technical cyber security teams;
- Providing oversight to planning and execution of Hunt operations;
- Managing and prioritising detection development across Defences complex cyber terrain;
- Identifying opportunities and overseeing the development of automation to increase visibility and reduce analyst response times;
- Lead complex problem solving and coordination activities, in support of time sensitive operational outcomes;
- Be responsible for building team capability through coaching, feedback, and mentoring activities to build resiliency and technical competency across a multi-disciplinary team.
This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. DSOC is the strategic centre for Cyber Security Operations within Defence. DSOC provides mission focused services across the Defence enterprise through a range of Cyber Security Operations functions including Incident Response, Digital Forensic, and Hunt. DSOC staff have access to contemporary tools, training, and support to enable them to achieve high quality, responsive, and dynamic outcomes in support of Defence and its mission.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will be:
- A proven leader who possesses strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, in-order-to understand and contextualise the threat to Defence, and enable decision making;
- Experienced in leading cyber security operations teams and capabilities, or leading in similar high tempo operational roles, preferably with experience in the management of either hunt or cyber security-engineering teams;
- A pragmatic self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, a flexible approach to achieving outcomes and a proven ability to manage competing priorities to a high standard of accuracy;
- Possessive of well-developed analytical skills;
- Experienced in stakeholder engagement, confident and persuasive communication with the ability to explain complex concepts and risks in plain language;
- Ability to engage with executive leadership across all levels of the organisation up to Band 3/3 Star.
- Experienced in managing multi-disciplinary teams;
- Experienced in empowering their team through setting clear performance standards, providing constructive feedback and offering support in order to achieve a shared mission.
