Your opportunity
At Mission Australia, we believe every person deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. We're seeking a Senior Lawyer - Property, Construction & Finance to play a vital role in making this vision a reality. In this mission-driven role, you'll provide expert legal and strategic advice on complex property, construction, and finance matters that directly support the development and delivery of social and affordable housing across Australia. By guiding our housing and property teams through significant projects, you'll help create lasting impact for individuals, families, and communities in need.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Provide high-quality legal and strategic advice on property, construction, development and finance matters to support Mission Australia's housing and service delivery projects.
- Draft, review and negotiate complex legal documentation, including development agreements, construction contracts, financing arrangements, conveyancing and leasing documents, and government tenders.
- Support the delivery of social and affordable housing projects by managing legal risks, compliance obligations and governance requirements.
- Engage and oversee external legal advisors, including preparation of scopes of work and terms of engagement.
- Identify, assess and manage legal risks and conflicts of interest in consultation with the General Counsel and internal stakeholders.
- Prepare and contribute to Board and Committee papers, providing clear and concise advice on legal, risk and compliance matters.
- Partner with internal teams on property transactions, acquisitions, disposals, procurement processes and financing activities.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, external counsel, financiers and government agencies to achieve successful project outcomes.
Requirements for success
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with current Australian practising certificate and a minimum of five years' post-admission experience.
- Extensive experience in property, construction, development and finance law, including managing complex and large-scale transactions.
- Training and experience gained in a mid to top tier law firm or in a large in-house legal team focussing on real estate transactions.
- Advanced drafting, negotiation and advisory skills, with the ability to present complex legal issues in clear, practical language.
- Proven ability to engage and manage external legal advisors, including development of scopes of work and oversight of performance.
- Strong risk management and problem-solving capability, with sound judgment in balancing legal, commercial and organisational priorities.
- Highly developed stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across diverse internal teams, Boards, financiers, government and external counsel.
- Exceptional organisational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Alignment with Mission Australia's vision and values, with a commitment to advancing social and affordable housing outcomes.
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
