Position Overview
East Preston Islamic College is a K-12 coeducational independent school that delivers high-quality academic and values-based education in a nurturing Islamic environment. The EAL Teacher (Primary and Secondary) is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing high-quality EAL programs that support students with English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) needs. The role involves direct instruction, in-class support, and collaboration with mainstream teachers to ensure EAL students can access and succeed in the curriculum. The EAL Teacher supports students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, promoting inclusive, engaging, and differentiated learning strategies consistent with the College’s Islamic ethos.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Deliver targeted EAL instruction for students in Primary and Secondary year levels, including small-group and in-class support.
Use ACARA EAL/D Learning Progressions, Language and Literacy Levels, and appropriate diagnostic tools to assess language proficiency.
Identify EAL/D students requiring additional support through assessments and referrals.
Plan and implement differentiated learning programs responsive to student needs, literacy levels, and cultural backgrounds.
Integrate language development across key learning areas, especially English, Humanities, and Science.
Model high-impact instructional practices in both pull-out and push-in settings.
Embed strategies that promote oral language, vocabulary development, academic writing, and reading comprehension.
Contribute to curriculum development, resource planning, and cross-curricular language integration.
Ensure students’ learning goals are clear, visible, and informed by assessment data.
Assessment and Reporting
Monitor, assess, and report on student progress using school-based and national EAL/D frameworks.
Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and their families.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student learning, including individual learning plans (ILPs) where applicable.
Support class teachers to modify assessment tasks and implement EAL-sensitive assessment strategies.
Participate in moderation and reporting cycles, including Parent/Teacher interviews and formal reporting periods.
Student Support & Wellbeing
Foster a welcoming, culturally safe, and linguistically inclusive learning environment.
Support students’ transitions into school, between year levels, and across curriculum areas.
Build strong relationships with families, including EAL/D families, to support learning at home.
Staff Collaboration and Professional Learning
Work collaboratively with Primary and Secondary teachers to support differentiated classroom practice.
Provide professional development and coaching to staff regarding EAL strategies and cultural inclusion.
Participate in team planning sessions, professional learning, and curriculum review.
Stay current with developments in EAL/D education, research, and pedagogy.
School Culture & Community Engagement
Promote an inclusive, values-based learning environment aligned with Islamic principles.
Participate in whole-school events, assemblies, and extracurricular activities that support community engagement.
Respect the cultural and linguistic diversity of the EPIC community and actively contribute to intercultural understanding.
Liaise with external agencies and community groups to enhance student support.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
Bachelor of Education (Primary or Secondary) or equivalent tertiary qualification.
Current VIT registration.
Postgraduate qualification in TESOL, EAL/D or equivalent.
Demonstrated expertise in teaching EAL students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Knowledge of the ACARA EAL/D Learning Progressions and Language and Literacy Levels.
Ability to assess, plan, and deliver differentiated instruction tailored to individual learning needs.
Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
Understanding of child safety standards, inclusive practices, and the role of culture in learning.
Commitment to the values of an Islamic school and respect for Islamic ethos.
Knowledge of the Victorian Curriculum, assessment standards, and literacy development strategies.
