What Does a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Do?
Heavy Vehicle Mechanics at Western Power keep our specialised fleet—trucks, elevated work platforms, and equipment—safe, reliable, and ready to support WA's electrical network.
As an apprentice, you'll learn to:
- Diagnose and repair steering, suspension, and braking systems
- Service engines, transmissions, and drive-lines
- Work with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Repair electrical and electronic systems
- Perform preventative maintenance and safety checks
This hands-on, physical role is based in a team workshop, with opportunities to work outdoors and in the community. It's perfect for someone who enjoys practical work and learning a trade that helps keep WA connected.
About the Apprenticeship
This 4-year program combines:
- On-the-job training alongside experienced mechanics
- Classroom-based learning to develop technical skills
By the end of your apprenticeship, you'll gain a nationally recognised trade qualification and be ready for a career in fleet and mechanical services within the energy industry
Who We're Looking For
We're seeking motivated, safety-focused individuals who enjoy active work and want to build a meaningful career.
You'll need to:
- Have completed Year 11 (including passes in English and Maths)
- Hold a WA ‘C' Class Driver's Licence
- Be 18+ by 9 February 2026
- Communicate well and work in a team
- Show strong work ethic and commitment to safety
- Be open to rotating between different WA depots
A Certificate III pre-apprenticeship is a bonus, but not essential.
What to Expect
The recruitment process includes:
- Psychometric testing and interview
- Literacy and numeracy assessment
- Assessment Centre (30 September - 3 October)
- Medical, drug and alcohol screening
