About the role
Join Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) in an impactful role where you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality mental health and disability legal services across the state.
As the Deputy Managing Lawyer, you will:
- Work with the Managing Lawyers to manage and supervise a team of lawyers, including mentoring, debriefing and casework assistance.
- Support the development, implementation and review of the Mental Health and Disability Law (MHDL) program objectives
- Contribute to professional and community legal education as well as law reform and strategic advocacy initiatives.
- Provide high quality legal assistance to clients of the MHDL practice through the conduct of casework, duty lawyer services, provision of expert advice and appearing as a lawyer in complex matters.
This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country.
About you
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- People management and leadership capabilities, with an ability to motivate and develop the skills and expertise of a team.
- Substantial knowledge or practical experience in providing quality legal services with a focus on mental health and disability law.
- An ability to provide strategic advice on legal and policy issues.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse clients and capacity to develop strong internal and external working relationships.
- A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
