The Opportunity
We are looking for a motivated Manager Economic Development to join our Office of the CEO Team in Kununurra to lead the development and implementation of the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley’s Economic Development Strategy. As Manager Economic Develpment, you will work closely with members of Executive and the broader management team in providing advice and support across a range of issues including high level contribution to the development, management and support for key strategic initiatives identified by the Shire.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and implementing the Shire’s Economic Development Strategy and annual Economic Development Action Plans
- Providing clear and accountable leadership to Economic Development and managing the delivery of strategic outcomes by implementing the Shire’s Economic Development Strategy
- Providing commercial acumen, strategic advice and commercial models to support the Shire’s commercial activities
- Provideing strategic advice to the Chief Executive Officer as requested and reporting to the Shire’s Executive Management Team (EMT) on matters that will impact on the strategic direction of the organisation
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with government, Chamber of Commerce and other industry stakeholders to foster opportunities for joint projects promoting economic development in the East Kimberley
- Creating relationships and networks with the East Kimberley key industries and identifying opportunities for the Shire to support specific industry initiatives to deliver economic benefits
- Leveraging state and federal funds and grant opportunities to support economic development outcomes in the East Kimberley
- Managing economic development programs and projects that stimulate the local economy and support sustained growth
Relevant qualifications or Diploma in Business Studies, Economics/Commerce or Project Management, a minimum of 5 years experience in a similar economic development role, portfolio Manager experience (i.e. financial planning, grant management for economic development in remote areas, forecasting and reconciliation for project financial health), current unrestricted WA C Class Driver’s Licence and National Police Clearance (within the last 6 months) are essential for this role.
You will also need experience in leading multidisciplinary teams including ability to act decisively and strategically as well as being a coach and mentor for the team, expertise in strategic planning to foster economic development, judgement in setting clear directions, excellent stakeholder management skills, ability to interact and influence at an executive level with sound communication and advocacy skills, and demonstrated positive and proactive attitude.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is located in the ruggedly picturesque and sparsely populated northeast corner of Western Australia (WA), stretching from the Northern Territory border to the northern most tip of WA.
The Shire covers an area of 121,000 square kilometres and is one of four local governments that make up the Kimberley region. The Shire includes the towns of Kununurra and Wyndham and there are also a number of Aboriginal Communities; the largest being Kalumburu, which is situated in the northern part of the Shire.
