There are currently three accredited Rehabilitation Registrar positions available at the Royal Darwin Hospital and Palmerston Hospital. A 6 months or 12 months contract is recommended for any advanced or basic trainee.
The rehabilitation services expanded in 2018 and moved to new facilities at the Palmerston Hospital in September 2018. This is a new 116 bed hospital 20 minutes from RDH but is one campus. The whole rehabilitation service is now in a purpose built facility along with the Geriatric service, 24 Hour ED, Pathology and Radiology. The unit has a 24 bed general rehabilitation ward dealing with a wide case mix of adult rehabilitation. This ranges from stroke/neurological, amputee, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic and multiple trauma. There is extensive exposure to the Indigenous culture and opportunities to attend Outreach clinics.
A private hospital with a rehabilitation ward is also collocated at RDH. Outpatient clinics cover prosthetics/orthotics, chronic pain, stroke and brain injury. Exposure to intrathecal pumps and botulinum toxin injections is available. There is also onsite hydrotherapy facilities and extensive allied health service. The positions are supported by RMOs. Two positions are based at PRH and are responsible for the inpatients and outpatient services. They are supervised by two consultants. The third position is responsible for assessing and reviewing the consults at RDH. They work with a consultant and rehabilitation CNC. Trainees are able to rotate through the 3 positions.
The Royal Darwin Hospital is a 360 bed tertiary hospital and is well supported by a large range of specialties and junior medical officer teaching. The Menzies-School of Health Research, The National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre and Charles Darwin Medical School is based there. The majority of rehabilitation referrals come from RDH.
There is a structured teaching program with formal learning contracts. The positions are supervised by three fully credentialed AFRM Fellows. Our previous trainees have been successful in Module 1 and 2 and the Fellowship examinations. The positions are suitable for advanced or basic AFRM trainees.
