The Role

Our region is in the midst of the most consequential strategic realignment since the Second World War. In such circumstances, it has never been more important for the Defence strategic centre to employ a wide and diverse array of talents. The Strategy, Policy, and Industry (SP&I) Group is keen to explore opportunities for public servants from all backgrounds. Our work encompasses an array of policy development and management roles that will enable you to utilise your abilities to the utmost – and develop new ones that will enrich your future prospects.

Examples of the impacts you could make include:

  • Strengthening our policy settings and ties with the US and UK to support Australia’s nuclear powered submarines and other advanced technology projects.
  • Working with our Pacific partners to improve regional security.
  • Gathering government and open-source data to analyse applications to advise whether activities will Affect Australia’s national interests.
  • Assisting and guiding Australian defence industry to find suitable export markets to improve Australia’s economic resilience.

This round will look to fill immediate vacancies as well as ones in late 2025 and early 2026.

Strategy, Policy, and Industry Group is a fully integrated civilian-military workforce, drawing on high-quality and motivated people from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines who embody Defence and Australian Public Service values.
