Position Summary

The Lead Spotter – C&D is a critical leadership role within the Construction & Demolition (C&D) area of our operation. Acting as the "quarterback" of the C&D area, this position is responsible for leading the spotting team, coordinating material flow, and ensuring efficient communication between Primary pickers, loaders, and the weighbridge. The Lead Spotter plays a vital role in optimising production, minimising downtime due to blockages or misdirected loads, and driving efficiency throughout the area.

This is a physically and mentally demanding role, requiring someone who is switched on at all times, highly observant, and able to remain calm under pressure. The successful candidate must take full ownership of the area, lead by example, and demonstrate strong leadership presence. A strong-willed individual with clear and concise communication skills is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and develop the spotting team to ensure safe and efficient material flow through the C&D line.

Manage the movement and direction of materials to prevent blockages and minimise unplanned stoppages.

Communicate effectively with:

Primary pickers on the C&D line

C&D feed loader operator

End bays loader operator

Weighbridge team to confirm load classification and expected tip-off location

Shift Supervisors and maintenance for issue escalation

Work proactively with the weighbridge to ensure all incoming C&D loads are accurately classified and directed to the correct tipping areas based on content and site needs.

Oversee spotter photos and data captured to ensure we are meeting key targets, communicate any necessary actions or focus areas as part of handover to other shifts.

Monitor load quality and material presentation, coordinating adjustments as needed to maintain consistent feed and reduce rework.

Provide real-time direction and support to machine operators and pickers to maintain production flow.

Respond quickly to line disruptions, hazards, or equipment issues and escalate where necessary.

Promote and uphold site safety practices and lead by example in fostering a strong safety culture.

Support and mentor new or junior spotters to develop their skills and confidence.

Ensure the C&D area is clean, safe, and well organised at all times.

Ensure bays are monitored and emptied on schedule to eliminate downtime due to bays being full.

Key Requirements

Demonstrated experience in waste, recycling, or high-volume production environments.

Leadership capability with a track record of guiding small operational teams.

Strong communication and coordination skills across multiple roles and functions.

Ability to make effective, real-time decisions in fast-paced environments.

Understanding of C&D material types and how to identify/classify loads.

Physically fit and able to work in a dynamic and often demanding setting.

Commitment to safe work practices and hazard awareness.

Confidence in working independently while leading a team.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience or qualifications in traffic control would be highly advantageous and support the coordination of high-flow vehicle and material movements on site.

As the key operational lead in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment, the Lead Spotter must demonstrate strong situational awareness, clear decision-making, and the ability to influence and lead others on shift.
