Are you an enthusiastic, resilient, flexible and adventurous educator looking for an exciting opportunity to work in a range of schools across rural, remote and regional Western Australia?

As a member of our Flying Squad of skilled teachers, you will work in different schools across the state to fill short term vacancies. This will allow you to interact with students across diverse social, physical, and educational settings and experience multifaceted work in diverse classroom settings where each appointment is different. In addition, you will receive free accommodation, travel to and from appointments and other incentives and allowances.

There is high demand for support across a range of primary teaching areas as well as across all secondary school subjects including Mathematics, Science, English, Humanities and Technologies. There are also many opportunities to work in our remote community schools and make a positive difference for aboriginal students.

If this teaching adventure sounds like the job for you, we strongly encourage you to join the Department’s Teacher - Flying Squad – Category 1 Appointment Pool.

Successful applicants will be employed in a 24-month, fixed term contract. After the successful completion of your two-year continuous service and probationary period, you will be appointed as a permanent teacher with the Department.

Flying squad teachers are an important part of our workforce, playing a crucial role in filling short term vacancies in regional, rural, and remote schools across the State. Often, these vacancies occur at short notice, with some requiring you to leave the following day.

Appointments will be for periods of five weeks to 10 weeks.

Early childhood, primary, and secondary teachers are encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from graduate, fixed term and permanent teachers who are available immediately as well as for Day 1, 2026.

As a Category 1 Flying Squad Teacher, you will be employed full time on a two-year contract. You will also receive a $16,500 per annum allowance, paid fortnightly. The allowance is paid in lieu of any other allowances provided to teachers based on the location of a school.

During 2026, you may also be entitled to receive an additional pro-rata Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARI) payment on top of your dislocation allowance if appointed to an ARI school for a maximum of 10 weeks.

How does this flying squad pool work?

The Teacher Flying Squad service is primarily used to assist schools that have identified an urgent and often unanticipated need for an additional teacher to support students at their school.

As part of our Category 1 – Teacher - Flying Squad team, you will travel, as directed, to selected regional areas to fill short term vacancies. You may be deployed on short notice and on occasion, may be asked to work outside of your area of qualification for short periods.

While you are employed on your two-year contract you will be have a ‘base’ school in the metropolitan area, or large regional area, depending on your circumstances and preferences. As you may need to be appointed to a vacancy on short notice, you will not have your own class at your base school or be part of the regular timetable. Instead, you will provide internal relief, or additional support at your base school. You will only work at your base school, subject to negotiation between the Flying Squad Coordinators and base school principal, if you are not required for flying squad appointment at that time.

Travel and accommodation are included during your deployments to regional areas. Due to the nature of the short-term accommodation provided, it is extremely unlikely that pets can travel alongside you to each location.

To be eligible for placement into our pool, successful applicants will need to reside or be willing to relocate to WA for the duration of the two-year appointment.

Is this right for me?

Our Flying Squad teachers have success where they can quickly and readily develop positive relationships with students, have a strong curriculum knowledge, and use effective classroom management strategies.

Your approach will be flexible and adaptive, with a practical mindset; someone who can ‘think on their feet’. You must also be willing, and able, to travel on short notice and be able to adapt quickly to living in different towns and communities, and to interact positively in communities that are different from urban settings.

If you are a current permanent teacher, you must first seek approval from your line manager to apply. If you are successful in being appointed to the pool, you will need to be released from your current role for the whole two-year period. After this time, you will resume your position at your substantive school.
