The Role

APS 6 Safety and Environmental Engineer role is responsible for providing the technical support to the Hunter Class Safety and Environmental Engineering team to deliver the HCF Safety and Environmental Case under broad direction. This role will manage safety and environmental hazards across complex systems of Hunter Class Frigates. This role requires a basic knowledge of defence safety and environmental policy requirements as well as Royal Australian Navy processes.

This role will exercise both initiative and judgement in the safety and environmental policies and in the applications of procedures. This role requires a high level of internal and external stakeholder engagement. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement. Current HCF System safety and environmental team consists of three members.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team

The Hunter Class Frigate (HCF) will be one of the most advanced warships in the world with cutting edge technology and capabilities. As Australia’s largest shipbuilding project, HCF provides the foundation for Continuous Naval Shipbuilding in Australia. We are working with experts from the UK, USA, Canada and Europe to provide six frigates optimised for anti-submarine warfare to the Royal Australian Navy.

The frigates are being constructed at the Osborne Naval Shipyard, South Australia utilising the latest production technologies. You will have access to generous working conditions as an Australian Public Servant in Defence. You will be supported in balancing work life with family and other priorities, with a variety of flexible working arrangements available. Information on Defence employees’ working conditions, including an attractive remuneration package with a generous superannuation contribution (15.4%), can be sourced from the Defence Enterprise Agreement.

Our Ideal Candidate

Key tasks of this role will include:

  • Review Hunter Class Safety & Environmental documents produced by prime contractors in compliance with Defence policies.
  • Develop Commonwealth Capability safety and environmental documents (including System Safety Program Plans, Hazard Log, and Safety Case Report) and ongoing management of the hazards.
  • Conduct/Contribute to safety and environmental working groups and project meetings.
  • Monitoring and ensuring safety and environmental aspects of the Hunter Class Capability in collaboration with other engineering teams.
  • Provide support to conduct system engineering activities.
