About the role

Ryan Catholic College, Kirwan is seeking an experienced and dedicated School Officer ASL - First Nations Education to commence as soon as practicable for a fixed term, part time position concluding on 6 December 2025.

The primary purpose of the School Officer ASL - First Nations Education is to work in collaboration with teachers to provide appropriate advice, practical support and guidance to assist First Nation students with learning and development. The School Officer ASL - First Nations Education provides assistance to First Nation students to optimise student learning outcomes in a supported environment with a range of cultural and educational programs. This role requires the School Officer ASL - First Nations Education to support students with special needs by creating an inclusive environment, providing accommodations tailored to their needs, and promoting their independence and self-advocacy skills.

The School Officer ASL - First Nations Education will demonstrate competency involving the application of knowledge and skills to a range of tasks to support teachers deliver contemporary learning and teaching. The School Officer ASL - First Nations Education ensures that all duties are completed to an acceptable standard as determined by the Principal.

Key Accountabilities

Pastoral Care:

Liaise with teachers to monitor the wellbeing of First Nations students

Assist First Nations students in the transition from community to school and be a positive role model

Provide guidance, pastoral care and advocacy for First Nations students and their families

Assist to de-escalate negative behaviour of First Nations students

Support wellbeing of First Nations students (lunches, hats, check in)

Support students engaged in the Emerging Leaders Program (mentors, check ins)

Learning and Teaching:

Work in classrooms, under the guidance of First Nations Education teachers and classroom teachers, to provide support for First Nations students

Organise and make resources for in class support when required under the guidance of the classroom teacher

Write notes regarding support provided to students (these can be used for targeted planning by classroom teacher, NCCD data collection, First Nations Education data collection

Attend Gangali Jarjums (Primary) / First Nations Homerooms (Secondary)

Community Engagement

Promote and attend special events and celebrations (NAIDOC, NRW)

Attend TCEO led PD each term (First Nations Education Networking Days)

Administration:

Weekly check in/department meetings

Meeting with First Nations Education Teacher regularly

To join this vibrant school community, you'll need

The ability to organise and prioritise a range of tasks and set priorities to meet deadlines in a busy environment.

Demonstrated competence and confidence in using a personal computer and relevant software packages e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Demonstrated experience working with students with disabilities and/or special needs is desirable.

Mandatory Criteria

Current Working with Children Suitability Card - The successful candidate will require a paid Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card, No Start policy developed by Queensland Government.

Current Driver’s Licence

Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville

Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.

For some positions it may be necessary for the successful applicant to be immunised against certain preventable diseases in order to minimise the risk of transmission.

Desirable Criteria

Cert III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, Cert III in Children's Services or Education Support or a commitment towards completing this qualification

First Aid qualification or a willingness to complete.
