About the Role

We are looking for two (2) Legal Practitioners to join our Alice Springs team, providing legal support to Aboriginal victim-survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence. This is a meaningful and diverse role that includes courtroom advocacy, community outreach, legal education, and systemic reform activities. You will deliver culturally safe legal assistance in partnership with Aboriginal Client Service Officers (CSOs).

Key responsibilities:

Deliver high quality legal advice and representation in the areas of DVOs, Child Protection, Victims of Crime Compensation, and Family Law

Manage a caseload from initial advice through to hearings and negotiated outcomes

Ensure that legal advice is culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and aligned with community expectations

Partner with CSOs to support clients with safety planning, housing access, transport, referrals, and court attendance

Contribute to early intervention efforts, including legal education workshops and outreach services

Participate in weekly outreach visits to remote communities to deliver legal services and stakeholder engagement

Keep accurate and timely records using Actionstep and comply with reporting requirements

Maintain strong professional links with courts, police, child protection services, health providers, and local NGOs

Participate in law reform activities and represent CAAFLU in policy and advocacy forums

Uphold professional and ethical standards of legal practice and maintain continuous professional development

About You

You will be a compassionate and committed legal professional with a passion for social justice. You thrive in complex environments, value cultural safety, and are committed to supporting Aboriginal clients.

We’re looking for:

Eligible to hold a restricted or unrestricted NT practising certificate

Strong written and oral legal communication skills

Ability to work collaboratively and independently

Understanding of family violence and Aboriginal legal needs

Experience working in a legal or community setting (desirable)

Selection Criteria

Essential:

Eligible to hold a restricted or unrestricted practising certificate in the Northern Territory.

Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities and the issues affecting communities – including disproportionate rates of family violence and child protection involvement and the contributing underlying factors.

Demonstrated commitment to meeting the legal needs of disadvantaged groups, particularly Aboriginal victim-survivors of family violence and those living in remote Aboriginal communities.

Demonstrated capacity to provide high quality legal advice and casework, particularly in the areas of law related to family violence, including excellent written communications skills.

Excellent oral communication and listening skills particularly the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people and with clients who have experienced trauma.

Ability to work as a member of a small multi-disciplinary team as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Good understanding of the organisation and management of legal practice, well developed time management skills and the ability to manage client matters and meet deadlines.

Hold, or the ability to obtain, a current NT Driver’s License, NT Ochre Card as well as undertaking a National Police Check and passing Aboriginal Land Permit requirements.

Desirable:

Post-admission experience in a community legal or family violence setting for one (1) or more years.

Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

About CAAFLU

The Central Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Unit (CAAFLU) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation providing culturally appropriate, holistic, trauma-informed legal and casework support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors of family, domestic and/or sexual violence—predominantly women. CAAFLU operates across Central Australia and the Barkly region with offices in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, and outreach to remote communities. CAAFLU’s services are built on a unique wraparound model that integrates legal advocacy and non-legal support through collaboration with Aboriginal Client Service Officers (CSOs).
