About the Team

The Ophthalmology team provides outpatient, inpatient, telehealth and surgical services to the community within the Children's Hospital and Health Service (CHHS) and in outreach clinics in the Cairns and Hinterland and Townsville Health Services. The ophthalmology team consists of ophthalmologists, fellows, registrars, house officers, orthoptists, optometrists and dedicated outpatient nurses and administration officers.

About the Role

  • Provide safe, quality, high-level orthoptic clinical services to patients of the Queensland Children's Hospital across the continuum of care, including inpatient, outpatient and outreach services.
  • Utilise high-level skills in evidence-based practice and establish clinical policies and guidelines based on best available evidence, apply high-level professional judgement to a routine caseload and demonstrate the knowledge and clinical skills required to make clinical decisions with a minimal level of supervision.
  • Utilise continuous high-level problem solving and critical thinking skills to support independent clinical reasoning and professional judgement.
  • Participate, as required, in outreach and education services across Queensland and northern NSW.
  • Provide high-level orthoptic advice through interdisciplinary team participation (multidisciplinary assessment and planning meetings, family meetings, school visits/ meetings and outreach programs)..
  • Provide high-level clinical advice to stakeholders.
  • Liaise daily with patients and their families, other health professionals, supervisors, students and researchers to ensure efficient and appropriate service delivery.
  • Accurately and concisely record all patient interaction as well as workload measurement statistics, to facilitate the analysis of service trends and actively influence practice change.
  • Provide clinical education and practice supervision to HP3 clinicians, orthoptic, optometry and medical students.
  • Participate in change processes and strategic planning within the Ophthalmology Service.
  • Identify and initiate development of orthoptic clinical practice procedures and guidelines and personal professional development activities.
  • Develop clinical practice knowledge and expertise.
  • Participate in quality improvement and clinical research activities that enhance the delivery of ophthalmology services.
