The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) is seeking an experienced People and Safety Officer to oversee both HR and Work Health & Safety operations across our community-focused organisation. This stand-alone position reports directly to the CEO and plays a vital role in supporting a culturally safe, compliant and high-performing workplace.
This is an identified role and is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants, in line with NCIE’s commitment to equity, self-determination and cultural leadership under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
About the Role
As People and Safety Officer, you will lead operational HR and WHS functions including:
Managing end-to-end recruitment, onboarding and offboarding processes
Overseeing WHS compliance, audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments
Coordinating injury management and workers’ compensation, including Return to Work co-ordination experience
Supporting compliance with relevant awards, employment law and licensing requirements
Maintaining accurate employee records, contracts, policies and procedures
Promoting wellbeing, reward and recognition initiatives
Providing advice and guidance across HR and WHS issues
Coaching Leaders across the Centre on employee development
What You’ll Bring
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a generalist People/HR and WHS role
Deep understanding of WHS legislation and ability to implement risk strategies
Strong working knowledge of HR processes, Fair Work Act and Modern Awards
Experience leading investigations, managing claims, and coordinating compliance
High cultural awareness and the ability to work respectfully in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contexts
Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and project management skills
Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism and continuous improvement
🎓 Tertiary qualifications in Human Resources, WHS or a related field (or progress toward)
✅ NSW Working With Children Check and National Police Check (or ability to obtain)
