Registered Nurse (Casual Pool) - Royal Hospital for Women
The Royal Hospital for Women is a multi-faceted tertiary referral and teaching hospital offering women a wide range of comprehensive women's health services. It is one of the world's leading hospitals for mothers and babies and for women with benign gynaecological and gynae-oncology conditions. The hospital is committed to the provision of excellence in health care for women as well as continued research into how to best provide that care.
The Royal Hospital for Women is the only stand-alone Women's Hospital in New South Wales providing unique opportunities for innovative clinical practice initiatives. It is part of South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and is co-located with other hospitals on the Randwick Hospitals Campus. The Campus offers one of the State's most comprehensive ranges of facilities and expertise in health care.
The Royal Hospital for Women is close to some of Sydney's best beaches, restaurants and sporting facilities and only fifteen (15) minutes from the Sydney Central Business District and harbour, adding a quality lifestyle to the satisfaction that comes from working within a committed and decided team. The Royal Hospital for Women is situated between the University of New South Wales and Coogee Beach.
Where You'll Be Working:
The Royal Hospital for Women has a number of opportunities for Registered Nurses across the Newborn Care Division, Gynaecology Division and Maternity Division.
Maternity Division:
The Close Observation Unit (COU) provides care for high risk and acutely unwell women, in a high dependency setting. COU is staffed by Nurses, Midwives and care is coordinated by an Anaesthetic Fellow.
Newborn Care Division:
The Newborn Care Centre is a forty-five (45) bed, Level 6 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specializing in all neonatal patients from pre-term to term, including neonates requiring surgery and/or complex multidisciplinary management. Nursing Staff care for over 1,000 babies each year. The Registered Nurse/Midwife will be required to work in all areas of the Newborn Care Centre with support provided by Nursing Educators and Clinical Nurse Consultants with in-house education and skill development opportunities available for all staff.
Gynaecology Division:
The Gynaecology Division at RHW provides comprehensive inpatient care for women undergoing surgical gynae-oncology surgeries, fertility treatments, palliative care, chronic pain management and many more gynaecology and medical conditions. The division also has a Chemotherapy day only unit, offering more than 1000 cycles of chemotherapy per year. The division also provides a vast range of outpatient services for a wide range of gynaecological conditions and related issues. This can include general gynaecology, pelvic floor and urogynaecology issues, endometriosis management, chronic pelvic pain, vulva health, and adolescent gynaecology. They also offer specialised nursing care for pessary fitting/insertion and vaginal dilation therapy, pre-admission clinics for surgery, and outpatient procedures like IUD insertions, hysteroscopy, and urodynamic testing.
The Fertility and Research Centre is one of three publicly funded IVF clinics which provides fertility preservations for cancer patients throughout the state. The Centre offers 500 cycles of egg collections per year. The clinic works closely with scientists in the Andrology and Embryology labs offering Intrauterine Insemination, Ovulation Induction and Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
Menopause Hub is a service at the Royal Hospital for Women, which provides a multidisciplinary and comprehensive service for women experiencing premature menopause, menopause with complex medical or mood disorders, history of cancer or concerns with bone health.
Breast Services (previously known as the NSW Women's Breast Centre) provides evidence-based diagnosis and treatment for breast conditions, serving over 2,500 women annually. As one of the leading breast services in NSW, it offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, same day service. This allows women to undergo all necessary investigations in a single visit, with follow-up visits scheduled as needed.
Recovery unit - RHW an 8-bed Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) supporting four dedicated women's theatres. It caters to a range of specialties, including Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Fertility, and Gynaecological Oncology. The unit provides recovery care for patients following general anaesthesia, sedation, and regional anaesthesia such as spinal and epidural blocks.
Day Surgery Unit is a separate 8-bed unit responsible for the preoperative admission, assessment, and preparation of patients scheduled for surgery. Postoperatively, the unit delivers short-term recovery care, patient education, and facilitates same-day discharge, ensuring a smooth and efficient perioperative experience.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of Nursing care within a designated unit. The Registered Nurse functions within the Policies and Procedures of the Department of Health, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD), Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) and the Nursing and Midwifery Division to co-ordinate and deliver high quality nursing care. Clinical supervision at the point of care is the role and responsibility of each Registered Nurse within everyday clinical practice, in line with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Decision Making Frameworks for Nurses and Midwives.

Selection Criteria:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the National Nurses and Midwives Registration Board
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others
- Demonstrated ability to proactively engage with patients/clients to enhance service delivery and to guide others in providing service excellence
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and apply professional and ethical boundaries when dealing with complex situations
- Strong computer skills including Internet and email, and familiarity with health information systems
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of risk management, safety and quality principles and the role of the Registered Nurse in applying these principles
- Demonstrated commitment to the NSW Health Breastfeeding Policy and the BFHI Principles’
- A minimum of 1 year postgraduate experience working within either a women’s health surgical or midwifery or neonatal/paediatric setting – experience to align with either RN or RM AHPRA registration.
