About the program

The Aftercare service is a non-clinical support service focused on providing psychosocial support to people experiencing a suicidal crisis or who have attempted suicide.

About the opportunity

The purpose of a Peer Worker isn't about therapy, or having to talk about suicide, it is about connecting with someone who has some shared experience of suicidality and recovery. It is focused on empowering people by providing compassion, guidance, encouragement, motivation and follow-up. Peer Workers will support individuals to develop skills, confidence, and knowledge to improve their wellbeing and community connections. They will encourage them to engage actively with their care team, including their Support Coordinator, to maximise the benefit they can receive from these services. And at other times they will sit and listen to their concerns, joys and experiences, knowing that being heard, and having someone to share recovery with is therapeutic.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Lived experience of suicidal ideation or attempt, suicide bereavement or had a close connection to someone who has died by suicide
  • Effective communication skills with people from a variety of backgrounds, including people from CALD backgrounds
  • Highly developed verbal and written skills, including the ability to write case notes and contribute to evaluation reports and documents
  • Experience in working with children/young people is highly regarded
  • Ability to build strong community networks utilising grass root approaches
  • Right to work within Australia
  • Current valid Driver's Licence and the ability to undertake some travel
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module Certificate (free online course)

About Wellways

Benalla, VIC, Australia

Wellways Australia Limited is a leading not-for-profit mental health and disability support organisation with services in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania. Our services span mental health, disability and community care, and reach thousands of people each year.

We work with a diverse range of people living with mental health issues or various disabilities, and their families, friends and carers, to bring about positive change and build good lives in their communities. This can include creating a home, securing a job and building meaningful relationships.

Our mental health, disability and rehabilitation services bring together evidence from research with an understanding of people’s lived experience—what works for them. Our mental health workforce includes clinicians, nurses, community support workers and ‘peers’—those who have a lived experience of mental illness and recovery. Together, they create an environment that focuses on hope rather than illness.

We work in partnership with people and their families to identify their own needs and goals and support them to attain a great life in the community. Our partnerships extend to clinicians, GPs, hospitals, community health organisations and government, ensuring that our services and programs reach people in the communities in which they live.
