Forensicare
Forensicare is the statutory agency responsible for the provision of adult forensic mental health services across Victoria.
Forensicare provides specialist forensic mental health services across 12 of Victoria’s 14 prisons with expansion underway to include Western Plains in the Barwon region. Forensic mental health is a specialist area within the mental health service system. The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community.
Through the Forensicare Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Approach and the Forensicare Cultural Safety Action Plan, the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are promoted, protected, and clear and achievable objectives are articulated:
- Accurate identification of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers.
- Provision of high quality and culturally sensitive ‘whole of health’ service.
- Creation of a culturally appropriate environment which acknowledges the specific cultural needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers.
- Partnerships forged with culturally appropriate organisations to improve discharge planning and post-discharge supports
Job Location
This position based at Ravenhall Correctional Centre in Melbourne's west, provides 75 prison-based custodial mental health beds as well as assessments and outpatient services provided in maximum-security forensic mental health complex within the medium-security prison.
About the Role:
Forensicare’s First Peoples Wellbeing Worker along with the multidisciplinary team aims to improve the social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) of First Nations consumers through effective engagement, support and linkage within the custodial environment and into the community. The position works closely with members of the prison Directorate and senior management to ensure the provision of high quality and culturally sensitive health for First Nations Consumers in custodial settings. The opportunity to work with other Forensicare First People’s staff (across clinical settings and policy roles) will be promoted and made possible, enabling a contribution at both the prisons directorate and whole organisational level.
Duties:
- Demonstrate a commitment to person-centred, recovery-oriented care delivery and ensure all elements of delegated work are completed to a high standard.
- Support clinicians to undertake a culturally appropriate SEWB assessment and provide cultural support as required for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers admitted to a custodial unit at Ravenhall Correctional Centre, where specialist mental health treatment is provided.
- Support service-wide initiatives to enhance consumer and family connections to country and kinship.
- Encourage access to cultural and traditional healing methods for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers at or awaiting transfer to the hospital.
About You:
- Demonstrated experience in supporting First Nations consumers through engaging connections with clinical staff and supporting delivery of care via the lens of a Social and Emotional Framework.
- Demonstrated commitment to Mental Health Recovery principles and improving social and emotional wellbeing outcomes for First people and communities.
- Demonstrated organisational, communication, liaison and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with a range of people and work effectively within cross cultural teams.
- Demonstrates high level of Emotional intelligence

Forensicare (Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health) is the state-wide specialist provider of forensic mental health services in Victoria. Forensicare is the only agency in Victoria that provides clinical forensic mental health services which span all components of the mental health and criminal justice sectors – giving Forensicare a unique perspective on mental health and public safety issues.
